Not hard to Get past Customs , got some coins from the UK few weeks ago($1100). Aust post sent out a letter with some customs info about holding my coins until they got a stat-dec.
All you need is a B374 Declaration form off the customs site fill in the info as well as you can, for Bu silver use Code 7106, Stat code 32, Exemption code LMP and customs fee of about 48.70 with the form, took less than a week to get my coins gst free.

yeah anything that comes through Australia Post is fine, if you gotta go with a private courier company UPS is the only one to deal with.

Thanks for that Renovator.

Do you have any issues with customs trying to charge you GST though when it lands in Australia??
Thats been the big thing thats put me off importing bullion from the US...

I would also like to know this :)

Hi, i got 60 oz from First Majestic who are good (canadain based but deal in US$)... 3x 20 tubes..

it totalled around $1250... i got a nasty call saying they were slapping GST on it... i demanded to speak to her supervisor and said you couldnt charge gst as silver was money... turns out they really can and try but if you are a DEALER or a Business you can be exempted, i just had to say to him i was??? Anyway i got out of paying it cos i said i planed to trade it in the future.. very flimsy law.. they also tried to charge me a customs inspection fee but this was never taken from my CC so i never paid it....

MY advice... buy in increments of under $1000 if importing...

I have got 6 deliveries from First Majestic and the other 5 have been problem free as under $1000 Australian.

lol - since all the bears are coming out of hibernation now calling it the "mania" stage, i'll also start calling names now and i think a good one may be the "decoupling" stage where physical decouples from the paper (spot) price...

Good observation Yippe,

Physical prices are decoupling from the spot price. People are losing common sense, they're becoming manic. This is what happens in the mania stage.

yeah it's the area of the GST act that is vague, as an individual you ARE technically paying GST, it's just that the rate is zero percent. I've had successful private rulings from the ATO granted, so it's definitely legit, but a cursory glance at the GST act has the comment about exemption if you are a dealer. From memory section 40-100 gets into input taxation for individuals. It's just a case of giving your business to the companies that are willing to process things easily and boycotting the companies that do not.

On the First Majetic website under FAQ there is a special note for Australian customers clarifying that GST is not payable on .999 silver. It also says if you are charged GST to refer to the link provided - a web link to the ato.

They must have had a few too many issues with this and have made some attempt to clarify things for customers - but perhaps does not help for people dealing with Fedex or whoever at the other end.

Not sure who the call (in 1for1's post) came from regarding the slapping of GST.

Yep, have dealt with them as an importer in a previous career. They range from the uber-helpful who dedicate an hour to walking you through some arcane process, to the "Use a customs broker! SLAM!" type. More of the latter unfortunately. I spoke to the manager of the former to pass on gratitude because the attitude was so rare.

hehe not to prompt guilt but they might have fired him because of that call to the manager!

Maybe we could have a sticky thread of all the australian and international sites people find for buying silver bullion, scrap silver and junk silver coins - probably have something like that already.

+1 for this idea

I received a phone call from UPS today my shipment had arrived. I told them they are LMP. The agent told me this is all he wanted to know for processing. Within two hours they called me back for the processing fee of $66 I payed instantly to the calling agent with my visa card. The shipment is clear now for delivery without even leaving my home or sending any email or form back to them. Excellent service!

excuse for stupid question, but what means LMP?

It cost $66 for USP telephone call?? Or is that for shipping fee?

^ think it's a simple typo of 'LPM', the tariff code for GST-exemption, $66 is the customs processing fee..

so can avoid "processing fee" if you mark package with correct code for GST exempt? Then no need processing or telephone call.
