Gallium is Cool !

Yep gonna do a vid later and some pics.. I've figured the gel might be silicone to keep its shape should it melt in transport, also allows for expansion too when it solidifies. Cool!

They encase the Gallium in gel, because of travel regulations.......The stuff is acidic like to Aluminium.

Well got it today in the mail, this is what it came in:

The actual Gallium came like this:

Then I warmed it up a bit with hot water to get it going, I was suprised at how long it look to start to melt. In my hand bitsd started to come off so I decided to keep it in the container for fear of loosing it all!

Half melted!

Took a crappy vid of it:

Its pretty crazy stuff, everyone I show can't get there head around it..tis weird!

one of the most fun things with gallium is if you put gallium on aluminium, it alters the aluminium's structure and weakens it to the point of catastrophic failure. Great party trick if you race aluminium framed bikes.

i also think, Uri Geller the spoon bender guy used gallium alloy. rub it, warm it, bend it, hey presto spoon bender superstar.

Currently got 100g of this stuff on order, 50g from netherlands and 50g from ebay seller in hk.
I am thinking of bringing in around 500-1000g and selling in smaller lots of 10-20g will offer on here first if they are interested, currently speaking with some suppliers at the moment regarding larger quantities. Their seems to be a huge price discrepancy between some suppliers, one supplier in the states who is the cheapest wont ship to australia, whilst another is asking for 250 postage+dg charges.

I think for science displays in schools this is a terrific metal to show students. That would be my target market IMHO. Oh & curious Stackers of course.

There hasn't been enough study into Gallium, I would be very careful you don't handle it too much without gloves.

Here's some info on it:

Let's not forget all the "safe elements" of the past, people were touching Radium untill their jaws fell off, it literally took that for people to wake up. Another great example being mercury. With metals that are not studied properly it always pays to be overly cautious. Sorry to ruin the fun atmosphere but just remember it's a liquid metal, you don't want it getting into your body.

Not quite as cool but another funky thing to do esp with kids is use cornflour made of corn and mix it with some water. If done in the right amounts you can pick it up if you keep it moving but when you stop moving the ball it melts off your hands. It's worth a go but not as funky as gallium.
