Fraudulent charges after buying from Perth Mint yesterday!!!

Just checked my AMEX, nothing yet but will keep an eye on it. I used it last time online for the proof dragons.

Anyway even if their site was legitimately DDOS'd I don't think they would redirect the DNS to a Russian mafia IP address :p

Chances are there's some spyware or addon in your browser?

Ok, I've just had a second member PM me and advise a similar thing has happened to their card this morning.

Check your credit card statements folks - if you find you have been affected, please PM me with your contact details should someone from the mint need to speak with you - it can help in technical investigation of any incident that may have occurred. I've advised the mint already of the issue.

I would like to point out that credit card fraud does happen every day - two reports out of 1000 visitors to Silver Stackers a day isn't damning evidence (I've had a fraudulent transaction on a card once every 2 years on average), but if a pattern emerges, it could be very useful for someone to be able to speak to you who is investigating the technical issues of any attack should it be confirmed that there was a breach.

Was the other member also US based? might be a locational thing from the ISP being compromised?

Just checked my credit card too - all ok. Purchased online from PM yesterday and a few days ago, no problems at all.
Earlier this year had a $3000 charge on my cc by someone in Canada, I check my cc online regularly so picked it up within a few days and got hold of the bank, they cancelled my card immediately and reversed the charge. Took a few weeks to get my money back, but bank was great and they sorted it all out for me. I am very particular when using cc online, only deal through paypal and reputable merchants who use secure online purchasing. Plus have good pc habits, never store details or passwords on my computer, run a firewall and microsoft security essentials (great free program).

I appreciate the heads up and I can see people supporting each other here which is nice. Many a silver stacker is more normal (generally nice and wanting to help) than the general population it seems.

No, Mac OSX, there are practically no viruses or spyware for OS X.
Also I mentioned earlier that I placed several orders some using the same browser just prior, using different cards, and none of them are compromised.
It could be a location based thing, theres a lot of hops between here and AUS.

Plus I ordered many other things using different cards from then to now using the same computer, no other problems.

was the other member North America based?

Australian member as far as I know, asked for details to pass to the Mint but didn't get any.

Here's another heads up.

My girlfriend was expecting a delivery from the Perth Mint.

So when "Australia Post" sent her an email stating it's ready to pick up at the postoffice.
"Please download attachement for details."

There is a virus inside. Luckly her virus software blocked it from opening automatically.

I thought it would be strange that Australia Post would have your email address?

People can get easily confused when they are expecting a delivery.

She then rang up Australia Post and they mentioned they are getting 1000's of calls
for the same email.

I use internet banking/purchases,Etax etc all the time and have never had an issue. I use the full version of AVG. It blocks absolutely everything suspicious.

i dont use credit cards over the net full stop ....bank deposits or nothing simple !
Credit cards are 100% safe if your card allows you to dispute and thus not pay for fraudulent charges like most.

Yeah I suppse it is a good thing!
But you guys don't cop the other end of it.
You guys don't hear the "can you get me one too".
Works out to be an expensive hobby mate.

Come to the Melbourne meetup she might bring along another female stacker friend.

yeah, its very easy to have your details compromised online. you may have picked up a drive by download that has leaked your info. i use a free program called sandboxie to help prevent these types of attacks. it might be worth checking out... http://www.sandboxie.com/
