foggy silver?

i recently picked up a few of these because you folks from down under (and nz) are so damn inspiring. they shipped from http://www.gainesvillecoins.com/

they have a slightly foggy appearance on the obverse. the reverse is all turtles all the time. no foggy appearance.

was just wondering if anyone knew what caused/why the obverse has the foggy-ness. it won't wipe off w/ a towel. some type of oil from the mint? i did what i thought was my due diligence on the seller. i'm confident it's real silver...just curious as to why it's not shiny like the rest of my silver rounds/bars?
 
Wes ..there has been a bit of discussion about this foggy apearance on Perth mint rounds ,already.Will try to post up a link to it ,when I locate it .

However ,the short answer is that perth mint put a coating on their rounds,which ,in certain circumstances turns cloudy.Not sure why yours is only the obverse ,but that might have been the side of the coin most exposed to the air for longest
If your coin is not encapsulated ,then that would be the reason for the exposure.

If it's really annoying you some acetone (nail polish remover) or alchohol will dissolve the plastic coating. Finishing up with a light rub with a soft pencil eraser should do the trick.
 
Nope - this is how the back of all of the Fiji Turtles I've seen are. Looks a bit different in the hand than that photo, but the obverse have that matt appearance, and the reverse is more "polished".

I wouldn't try cleaning it - it's the minted state of the metal from the mint dies. And yes, the 1oz is $2.
