Fedex wanting duty paid for U.S order of 9999 silver

IMPORT DEC N10 AIR CHARGE (GOODS VALUE<$10,000) 50.00
AQIS − ENTRY CHARGES AIR 38.00
TOTAL AMOUNT PAYABLE 88.00.

Research shows these are administrative fees for the lodging of the declaration etc.

I got charged all those fees with FedEx too.
FedEx like charging extra fees for no reason. They need the extra money to help pump up their stock price.

I Never had extra charges with DHL or UPS

It's a BS fee they charge for processing time for an error of their own making....

Well I ended up paying the $88.

I spoke with fedex about the fee and they assured me they didn't receive a penny of it, as it was an AU import fee imposed by the government. As such they had no discretion over the fee.

Any package from the US valued between $1000 - $10,000 pays $88.

If that's true or not I don't know, but alas it is what it is. o_O

General rule of thumb re ATO and the imposition of GST....If the good being imported regardless of value (including more than AUD1,000.00) is not subject to GST when sold at retail in Australia, GST cannot be applied / charged on the same type of item if imported...ie 999 Ag or Au.

Applies only to small turnover exporters to Australia, which is very unlikely to be golden state mint. I bet though they are not collecting GST for gold eagles etc.

Well my order has arrived at last and I must admit well worth the wait.

This was my first venture buying from the US and a few lessons learnt.

I now have a new credit card which does not charge a fee for international transactions for currency conversions.

I was most disappointed when the card I used for this order charged a $44 fee to convert to US dollars 3 days later!

Having the GST / Duty removed was simple enough via supplying a signed declaration as per previous posts.

Only hidden fee was the $88 charge which was an administration fee via customs for the clearance etc.

Thanks to all who made comments in this discussion.

Keep an eye out for some Aztec 1oz rounds for sale at a forum near you.

I'm not sure about that. Take Bullion Now for example. They import large quantities of Au & Ag 999 and better into Aust from all the major global mints and sell same to the public without GST. On gold Eagles, Krugs and Sov they do apply GST as they are only 22k and Bullion Now gets charged GST on import and passed it right onto the retail buyer in Aust.

999 is GST free.

I was saying in general that there won't be very many examples of the AUD1000 threshold applying in practice. It's only for very small turnover exporters to Australia.

In theory, Bullion Now pays GST on importing a gold eagle but they're suppose to pay to the exporting mint, not at the border. EDIT: Scratch that, even I'm confused. Gold eagles is GST at the border and a smaller sov, for example, the mint collects the GST on behalf on the govt.

The Australian system's totally messed up with a a ton of loopholes which you can take advantage to avoid GST. Each party - exporters, couriers, customs - have their own interpretation of Aust law. Few seem to know what the GST rate is (not always 10% on top) and what it's applied to. I'm pretty familiar with different interpretations and who is too lazy to even bother applying tax. I carefully choose combinations of exporter and customs agents and skip most GST on items to which it applies.

This fee is normal. I've had to pay it that many times I lose track.

UPS / Fedex vary by a few bucks.

This is why we get big orders to amortise the fee across.

Agree that fee is normal for FedEx. I think UPS is slight higher. Gst should not be charged unless you have proof or numismatic in the order.

Split orders into bundles under $1000 aud to avoid the Duty. Make sure the bundles have separate order numbers...down side is extra freight

Thanks for your series of posts. Very educational I feel for many of us. As an aside, it's only been over the last 12 months that I've used Wise for international payments. I can't speak high enough about it as an alternative to banks (credit cards).

I'm looking into the WISE system and just signed up but still unsure how it works.

I see you can create a US account and deposit cash into it.

Does that mean you can use it to do a direct US wire transfer when buying bullion in the US at the cheaper rate compared to the CC option?

been using wise...very quick to transfer to your direct/local acct as they use OSKO.except after hours/weekend...i was surprised cause PP takes 3-4days...but very negative reviews online.. perhaps those are for old time experience... I not affiliated to them... but do own risk...the main thing to need to keep inmind... you need to exchange to AUD first in 24 before transfer to your local acct.. dont do USD transfer straight to your local acct...
