Fantasy coins

There doesn't seen to be any discussion about fantasy coins here. I recently took possession of two 1936 Australian crowns, cast in sterling silver, marked with a 60th anniversary privy. I think they are pretty cool. Any other fantasy coins out there (no fiat).

Edit to attach a dodgy picture

Kickstarter is full of coins from "The Game of Thrones" series and somewhere I have some hobbit money. Other than that, I don't know much about the fantasy coins.

I've got some 1921 silver square threepence etc with various Aust. animals on the front and the king on the back.

I've always wondered if they were collectible or not as I haven't been able to find much about them.

I'll take a photo and post if I can dig them out

From what I understand most of the original coins were struck in Copper-Nickel (2500) and Gilded bronze (? mintage). I found a silver one in great condition (Ag coins had a mintage of only 250) and I recently sent it to PCGS for slabbing. I will let you know what it comes back as ??

Who are you responding to? The OP?

Yes just original post by i***g that most of the original Fantasy coins were not silver but, Cu-Ni. I have only seen 1 silver one. The reminted ones are silver but the round is larger than the original crown. The ones with the privy are reminted - probably are silver.

These ones?

I think they are mentioned in one of the McDonald's Catalogues but I don't collect them myself. From Downies
Description:
Seldom seen on the market, we are proud to present the Melbourne Mint's 1921 Pattern Square Penny Type 12.

One of Australia's greatest rarities, with the TOTAL mintage for the thirteen 1919-21 Square Pattern types just 200 coins, this series sprang from an initiative to find a lighter alternative to Australia's halfpenny & penny types. Although the idea was received favourably, the project died with the resignation of its major advocate, Treasurer William Watt.

Notable for the distinctive obverse portrait of George V by Australian artist Douglas Richardson, the 1921 Square Penny Type 12 was the penultimate issue of the series. Uniting supreme Choice Unc quality and undeniable rarity, this coin would make the perfect centrepiece for any serious collection or diversified investment portfolio.

Thanks Jiz, that photo is of a proper penny. Mine are 3d with a possum hiding behind the 3, one with a whale and I can't remember the rest. Will get it out over the coming weekend.
Thanks

The coins in my picture are marked as sterling silver but I haven't had them tested.

Hi Renee,
below are some of my coins. I do have a possum one as well but i can't find it at the moment.
I think that the larger ones are aluminimum but the smaller one is silver.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,

Haven't forgotten about these, we've just been very busy with a recent campaign.

So far the info I have found is that we offered a collection of these fantasy coins in copper, silver-plate and "golden alloy". We didn't create the coins, we purchased them from someone else who had created them.

As far as I can tell at this stage we didn't offer the 5/-, only 3d, 6d, 1/- and 2/-. The small coin in your photo would therefore be the 3d silver-plated proof.

There were no solid silver fantasy coins produced.

I'll look into if I can find out any info on the 5/-. I've been told it could be cupro-nickel or just nickel but I don't have confirmation on that yet.

It's been very hard to come up with info for these even considering we sold them ourselves in 2006 (and apparently they were very popular), so I'm not surprised you've had trouble with getting info.

Will keep you posted.

Kind regards,

Renee
