The coin may be fake and may not test correctly but you still have to use the tester correctly.

The main sensor on the pmv, the test piece must be MINIMUM the size of the circle on the platform. Also all test pieces must be a minimum thickness and depends on metal too.

This machine can be very precise if used correctly, it has detected pure gold which didn't quite pass and when xrf'd it had a very small amount of silver in it. But 999 gold and the dealer still purchased it. I have a fake sovereign, didn't pass but came back as 21.6ct rest copper and silver.

Added a pick for the size and sensor specs, main sensor minimum 24mm diameter. Remember if it doesn't pass doesn't mean the worlds end, do further checking, I believe it can show insight into the imperfection of how things are or were made in the day. Obviously a fake but still may have value.

Just make sure you use the equipment how it is supposed to be used.

Just to add I've got a random metal bar which I can make pass on the main sensor if I put it in the correct position, doesn't cover the whole sensor though and definitely no precious metal in it.

Also high relief or large stamping the machine doesn't like.

The sigma can be very touchy I get the same issues with early sovereigns but they pass the xrf

I think if there's a slight deviance in composition the sigma doesn't pass it
 
Yes i agree. my $200 gold coins doesnt pass the sigma, but they are very close (box slightly outside the brackets)
 
Without access to an XRF, the sigma is still an awesome relatively low cost investment for checking purity. I am really happy with mine, even though I don't use it as often as I would like to be haha
 
I got 2 of them failed xrf but they pass the sigma

I sent them back for a PayPal refund and they bounced back to me delivery address not known
 
In fact one of them I already sold here but I had 2 on instinct and commen sense I xrf tested the other and came back as fake so I notified the buyer and had him send it back can't remember who it was
 
Thanks for that... interesting how 10g PAMP bar is using that transparent packaging...so you're saying this is fake and sigma reads it as pure, right? I hve not seen fake PAMP bars in those transparent packaging...only seen those fakes in the newer packaging, where no transparent section..
 
I actually received a modern proof Sov not long ago from a coin store. I had it posted to me and when I opened the package it looked odd straight away so I checked it over and was 100% fake. I sent it back for a refund but I would suggest that even if you receive a case and certificate I would check it over anyway.

Eliassamaha - can you see my post #23 - you are not using the sigma correctly. I have seen a lot of stackers here not using the main sensor correctly positioning smaller bars etc on it. There are strict instructions on how to use this and a 10g bar is too small to use on the main sensor. I think I remember the pics of the pamp you were selling and I questioned you about it straight away as it was not used correctly.

The unit can come with some wands, and you can't test a piece that is smaller than the wand surface the same as you can test a piece that is smaller than the circle on the main sensor (think of the main sensor as larger than the bullion wand). Even a 1oz gold bar is too small for the main sensor and needs a wand.

I am sure if you use the small wand on the 10g pamp it will fail it.

Here is an example of my 100% FAKE gold bar passing for pure gold on the sigma - but it is not used correctly. Using the sigma correctly ensures a proper reading.

Buyers and seller alike please educate yourselves on how to use this machine properly. This is not a dig at anyone, just please be aware of how the unit should be used.

Small wand 8-18mm
Large wand 18-24mm
Bullion Wand 24mm+
Main sensor BARE metal 24mm+, capsule or card 30mm+
All the above depends on thickness too.

ANYTHING LESS THAN 24MM BARE METAL OR 30MM CARDED CANNOT BE USED ON THE MAIN SENSOR (PLATFORM)!!!:eek:o_O:confused::D:cool:

Lost count of how many times I've tried to warn sellers on DUMBTREE ....
One guy wanted $500. for a 1900 Sov. with QV Jubliee Head !! ( last used 1889 ? )
 
Looks like i need to pay more attention about which wand to use.

Also the original seller had the coin XRF'ed. and it turns out to be 14k instead of 22k
