And somehow so much stuff on Ebay that is listed in Australia as its item location ends up being drop-shipped from China. Instant negative feedback. Ebay has become a cesspool.

I actually don't see a problem with that listing. It's never described as gold composition or bullion. Most of the real howlers on ebay are silver. New silver that's plated or old silver that's spark eroded.

Nothing wrong with buying on eBay as long as the price is reasonable and you practice due diligence and get anything you buy on there tested by XRF.
Some of my best bargains over the years have come from eBay buys, so don't knock it.
Although, I must admit that the bargains are few and far between on there these days.
There was a time when I used to spend whole days in front of the computer refreshing the just listed items on eBay and scooping up the bargains, like the $100 face value gold coins for $100 each that some of the members of the opposite sex used to sell to me sometimes
Plus, let's not forget the 10% off eBay deals that they had regularly in years gone by, it was a surefire way of stacking under spot gold back then for those in the know!
Sometimes I feel a bit sorry for Newby stackers these days, as they have it a lot harder than we veterans used to have it.

I second that, I have picked up a few gold and silver bargains on eBay over the last couple of years with only 1 gold and 1 silver coin that didn't pass the XRF test at my local bullion dealer and both times I got a refund.
The silver was the CuNi version (a 60's Greek coin) and I had to go through the dispute process as they refused to answer my refund request (I got to keep it as well since I couldn't return it without an address) and the gold coin (a modern Australian 1/4oz) was refunded after a week, although begrudgingly and a day short of being able to involve eBay (that one was returned)

Why not? Perth Mint, Swan Bullion, Little Coin Shop etc. have sold or are still selling gold on ebay. Sometimes the Perth Mint has had a 20% off discount on some items that were actually cheaper than anywhere else you could buy them. A few years ago I bought from Cotton & Co (at the time a big bullion seller) and used a free ebay $50 voucher, bought some 1/10 oz gold lunar dogs, coins were brand new as from the mint.
