China's northern city of Shenyang has reached a new level of notoriety for a recently discovered strip mall full of fake retail, banking and lifestyle brands.

The strip mall behind the Wanda Square in Shenyang is lined with European-style boutique stores, but unlike most European boutiques, every shop is a copy.

Everything from CNANEL to PRD, even a fake bank Standard Chertered and Starbocks complete the shopping experience.

I think they're more for marketing purposes when agents are trying to flog space in the huge empty shopping malls. When showing prospective tenants it's better to have some recognizable names and logos instead of hundreds of empty shops.

A business owner in one of the ghost malls was told that they were temporary shopfronts until the actual brands moved in. Something like 2 years later and he's still the only tenant of 5 floors!

That actually makes sense - I had a quick search on the web to see if I could dig up anything about it being promotional etc but couldn't find anything.

So basically empty stores so that it looks like a desirable high-end mall while they try to get real tenants in to what would be otherwise unbranded empty shops.

Maybe they could try that at Docklands :)

Couldn't find the video with the shopkeeper talking about it but from about 3:20 they talk about the branded shops set up just to trick the buyer/leesee into thinking it'll be a high-end SC. Although all these ones seem to be spelled correctly

Did come across this incredible story while searching;

China is famous for fakery, including counterfeit pork and mutton from fox, mink and rat meat, which resulted in the arrest of 904 people in May and the seizure of 20,000 tonnes of fake meat. In August, according to the state-owned Xinhua News Service, police prosecuted 19,000 cases involving production and sale of 5,000 tonnes of food and drinks, 2 billion tablets or bottle of drugs, 3,100 tons of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, and more than 53 million personal care products, machinery and electrical products.

Well I started out thinking it would be like some kind of alternate reality theme park.

Would make a great practical joke to drug someone and have them wake up in the place with everyone acting as if it was all perfectly normal.

However if the shops aren't really open it probably wouldn't be worth the airfare and paying for all the actors.

From today's news: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-04/an-chinese-people-have-been-making-oil-out-of-foxes/4933120

A total of sixteen people have gone on trial in China accused of a $10 million scam which saw waste from animal parts used to make cooking oil.

It's been reported in local papers that suspects allegedly used waste oil from the fat of chickens, ducks, pigs, cattle and foxes, as well as fox fur, chicken feathers, and "leftover pieces of offal and poultry".

Mmm...foxy!
