Still a n00b when it comes to older bars. Sure, the company has been around for a while, but why does their hand-pours command such a high premium over, lets say, silvertowne hand-pours (or any other individual for that matter)? I'm thinking there has to be some other factor besides the company's age. Silvertowne is pretty old too, but the premium on their bars are not nearly as high. All you seasoned hand-poured collectors see the same value in these. To me, it's just a scratched up block, so please share the nuances in these bars that you guys obviously have an eye for. Why are they so appealing?
 
I own only one Engelhard and its a half kilo. I would like to buy more but they just dont show up for sale (pm me if you have one :D) they are getting tougher to locate,like a good Holden HQ and just as reliable
 
The thread house linked will lead you to the answers. Bottom line is since Engelhard went OOB in 1987, you're dealing with collectibility. Comparing SilverTowne bars to Engelhard bars is like comparing a Chevrolet or Buick to a Duesenberg.
 
Half kilo engelhards sometimes pop up on ebay. But they command such a high premium that they can easily cost more than a kilo engelhard!
 
Yes, it's about Rarity. They aren't being made anymore so some people are willing to pay extra for them.

BUT, if Engelhard was making bars today you would see the premiums drop.

Just watch and see what happens with the JM 10 oz bars. They are bringing the label back (but made by Sunshine), and thus I would expect that premiums for the older bars will ease back some. Especially the bars that look similar to what's going to come out again. (Boring IMO)

Conversely, if Silvertowne suddenly stopped making silver, or even just the hand pours; eventually in time the premiums would rise on them as well. How much is all about market supply and demand.

Below are some of the reasons that I can think of

1. The company is no longer around
2. Well made
3. Widely known around the world
4. Good history about the company

Engelhard metals not only command premium on poured bars but everything in general
(poured or struck, bars or rounds)

Engelhard seems to have stronger colletor base than most refiners in the market place, therefore the premium is higher than most. It's all come down to supply and demand.

They are starting with new serial numbers for those 10oz JM bars so the lower numbers will probably fetch a good premium, jmbullion (not Johnson Matthey) say they have the first 5k ser nos

Im an Engelhard collector also, supply and demand is what keeps them selling at a good premium
 
The new JM bars are not being minted by JM though.

So that could be a factor in determining whether such newly minted bars will have any collectible value moving forward.
 
The thing is, there are lots of JM collectors out there, probably more than Engelhard so they will keep the premiums high.

That might be true but Engelhard always brought more premium than JM especially the rare ones. Perhaps engelhard collectors are a bit crazier....who knows
 
Engelhard 1 oz bars PJ 00003 and 3 other low number bars from the pj series, they are under 500 in serial number. Check them out on ebay, all b.o. will be considered. The number 3 bar is the lowest Engelhard bar ever posted to ebay in any size/weight and series. This is a collectors dream for such a low number bar
 
Yes, but how many number 3 Engelhard bars are around? This is the first ever posted to ebay and maybe the first ever seen to a lot of people. A lot of Engelhard bars were melted, especially the 1 oz bars. This might be the only number 3 left, of any series, possibly the lowest number as well. TY I hope I do sell as well

Where did you find Sunshine is making new Johnson Matthey 10 ounce?
 
Bought 12 Titleist Golf Balls today, still new in box with the Engelhard stamp on each 1, worked out at just under $3 US each with shipping so not too bad
