ENGELHARD

I really don't understand why some of these engelhard bars sell for so much. That 1oz bar is already selling for more than 1kg of silver! And I don't find it anything special.

They're rare. It's that simple really.

Plenty of things are rare and nobody cares about them but if you look at the history of the Engelhard company, you'll start to get an idea about why the brand is sought after - it was an American chemicals and metals company with a history dating back more than a hundred years (back when America still made things). It made the first catalytic converter that went into (American made) cars. It used to be listed in the Fortune 500 group of the largest companies in the United States. Bars were made in Engelhard facilities all over the world and often carry "mint" marks.

Some of the bars in circulation now were made back in the 70s and 80s when all sorts of crazy things happened in the silver market, so the bars themselves have a history that some people find interesting and want to own.

$70US for a ASE? Is Brilliant Uncirculated how all eagles come from the mint or is this different?

edit: oops was meant to quote your link there spanner

Yea that guys prices are a rip off and I feel sorry for anyone who pays those prices.

On a side note I have been picking up Engelhard stuff left and right at my various LCS.

I got 6 Engelhard Bars various designs for $24/each with spot at $22-

I have been buying Engelhard 1984 Rounds "Big E" Design for $5 over straight from the mint Engelhard Tube. I also got the tube from the Shop since I was buying so many almost daily I would pick up a few. When it got to the bottom I asked for the tube to keep them in. These tubes are rarely found these days and the rounds were in Mint condition.

I also bought some random Engelhard Rounds with the Eagle on the back 1987, 1982, 1984, & 1985 for around $25/each with spot at $20-

Engelhard has become one of my favorite brands for "Generic" Silver even though its name brand gear

Bloomst's link doesn't work so I found this one: http://freesilverguide.com/engelhard-bars/
The serial on this is FP68675 (so 1981? 1.2million running around), still in its original plastic wrap (hole to one corner hence why it's in a card sleeve).
My question is: Is there much of a premium expected/given on these bars? (ignoring the last few week's correction).
Thanks, in advance

Thought I would share this nice 20 oz:

$35-$40 tops on fleebay
I've bought them before & sold them as just standard bullion
I don't chase the numbers , I just look for the type of bar it is
And the hefty premium is only on poored & odd weight bars
Once they are minted bars the premium drops off

I'm thinking of buying a kilo bar at auction - what might that be worth?

Depends on which condition/style it is, got a pic? I'd say most go for between $800 and $950 but I've seen $1,200+. Depends how much you want it ;)
