Another member mentioned he was compiling dragons from the mints of the world so I thought I would list the 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce coins (didn't list dragon privy coins) I'm aware of in case he or anyone else would like to add to what I've put together so far. It's late in Arizona and I'm sure I made mistakes but it's a start.

What! No pictures!?

Thanks for the list, as my wife just commented, seems like the Perth Mint have more dragons than the rest of the world put together, how's that for cultural diversity?

I will now check off what I have.

Hey Jizlizard,

That's still less than 700,000 total Perth Dragons of all types, not bad considering the US Mint sold 950,000 proof silver eagles and 40,000,000 bullion eagles in 2011. Too tired to look up Maple Leafs and Pandas mintages but they are all in the multi millions aren't they? Glad to help with your check list. :)

Palau
And others :)

Just a quick question, the 1oz Specimen red/orange dragon from the type set, is that the same coin as the 1oz red/orange dragon from the set of 9 (and soon to be set of 10 in Australia)?

If so, it means I don't have to buy the type set, which would be good as I have the others.

I think the typeset coin is specimen and the red orange from the 9 coin set is not. Comparing them side by side they do look slightly different to me, the typeset coin coloring is darker than the 9 coin red orange. NGC slabs them with different labels as well. NGC labels the typeset coin [colorized] and the 9 coin is [red orange colorized]. Maybe someone else can chime in but in my opinion they are different. Hope I'm wrong though Jiz for your pocketbook's sake.

Anyone who would can to add to the partial list please feel free and if you could add the specifics of the coin added it would be appreciated. I will then add all the info to the list if anyone is interested in an updated list.

By the way, you can buy just the typeset coin graded 2012P S$1 Australia Year of the Dragon MS69 Colorized by NGC for $150-200 and crack it out if you don't like the slab.

That is a shame!

The difference in colour could just be down to an ink cartridge running low when they go through the printer, or whatever the pad printing equivalent is.

So they have

Bullion
Specimen
Proof

and possibly one other finish that they use on the coloured coins in the 9 coin set.

We know they put colouring on specimens (post office 1/2oz) and proofs, I wonder if they would put colouring on bullion coins? The nine coin set aren't bullion are they.

I guess I could always ask them!

I was of the understanding that if a .999 BU coin was pad printed it was not considered bullion, as the printing process would natually add a premium to the coin?

Good point.

So what is the difference between a bullion finish and a specimen finish? Most of us can spot a proof finish.

I've seen variances in the color applied in coins that are labeled the same (colored proofs, Berlin coin special) - mostly on the darkness of the color - so I would say (for the colored coins) very hard (ie, next to impossible) to tell if two coins from different sets were intentionally made differently

With so many dragon coins out there, we should make a poll to see which coin is the best :)

That's a fab idea.

Use 1 Oz coins as the proxi size, have a web page with the picture of each and a poll. One vote per member. Report results weekly. It would get the interest of mint marketing departments that for sure. An excellent way to attract traffic to the host web site (hint).

That's a lot of dragons, we may need a Dragonopaedia similar to the panda mob

I am starting to agree, I think we need something ...

the number of varieties is getting crazy

the Niue, Fiji, and Francs coins are tough ... just about anyone can mint them

for some coins (like the Palau coins) there is no mention of the mint on the packaging

and then there are the many various silver coins from the China mints for the Chinese market (besides the main 4 - proof, color, blossom, fan) - many are sold as silver plated (and clearly marked as such), but some are billed as solid silver (and would fall into the list) ... the hard part, aside from finding the coins, is making sure the coins are genuine

and then add to that the additional coins that are coming

... what a mess

Ebay has a ton of coloured dragons available from China, no idea who is making them, there are so many they seem to make the Perth Mint look conservative!
