A RARE coin expert obsessed with basketballer Michael Jordan collector cards stole $537,000 in coins and banknotes to ''self-medicate'' an undiagnosed mental health condition.
A psychologist yesterday told a Melbourne court that Marcus Loricchiella, 31, ''achieved a level of psychological comfort'' through offending and then trading in the cards.
Jeffrey Cummins said while Loricchiella stole for greed, by stealing from his employer, selling coins on eBay and then buying and hoarding Jordan's cards he gained solace and support.
Mr Cummins described Loricchiella's actions as ''comfort stealing'' and added: ''Those actions assisted this man to manage his previously undiagnosed and untreated depression and anxiety symptoms. He was effectively self-medicating through those activities.''
He said Loricchiella was obsessed with the cards and collecting DVDs, which he spent ''excessive'' time trading in on computers and eBay.
Prosecutor Damian Ellwood said a stocktake by Downies Coins Pty Ltd in July last year found dubious coin transfers by Loricchiella, who had worked for the company since 2004.
Mr Ellwood told the County Court Loricchiella later admitted removing coins from work in his pockets and posting some to himself and had owned about $100,000 worth of Jordan cards.
