Hi BBQ, My starting point with these objects has been with the metals.and some understanding of timber and it's properties.I have tried to fuse the two in the work I do.
You don't need hi tech tools to do this kind of work..just files and sharp saws.It is the opposite of"Big Tools"
I get my materials from scrapyards..small bits and bobs that might have gone to the melting pot..
If you have the imagination....the rest comes naturally
As to storage..always a problem! "The bigger the shed..the more you find to put into it "

The amusing feature of this is the "collar" around the round in capsule.it was originally from a bit of brass hose fitting,found in a scrap bin.Cut and filed,with patience AND love..I have experimented with some copper trim on the base,since the first photo.I take pics at many stages.Helps me to gauge the progress

The recent rains have provided a chance for me to get this box finished ..
I reckon it fits together fairly well..structurally sound and the Spotted Gum timber I used seems to rhyme well with the brass and copper tones.
The metal will darken over time and the poly finish deepen in colour ..hope it ages gracefully
On the top I have mounted a Perth Mint Commemorative Copper/Bronze ,,to echo the Swan symbol on the Calendar round.The rest is just hand cut brass and copper
The commemorative was already holed before I got it .so I just put a discreet screw to hold it in place ,rather than use glue ..too permenant and too harsh on the old king in obverse

Hey mate - Great to meet u last weekend - you obviously are aware there's a big relation between some of that old chandlery brass & boat kit floating around second hand B & the feel of your box here... I used to spend hours trawling for kit in Amsterdam finding bits to kit out a cottage I was renovating buit in 1754...
I found so much stuff that was compatible, like tying-off fittings, lightholders, tons of kit... I know a couple of master carpenters whose work is just mindblowing - interior doors made like submarine doors, organic shapes & themes, funky stuff rather than trad -they're never out of work... Keep it up mate...
Listen - Can you make me an oblong box about 6'6"' long, 3' wide, 2 1/2ft deep, soundproof, lockable from the inside with its own oxygen supply so that I can have some space I can call my own in mate?
