Newby here,

I have found some crowns for sale at $28 a pop

I believe they are .85 oz silver in each, worth it? or not.

Sounds like a pretty good deal for an Aussie crown, if that is for pick up or inc. delivery. They are 0.8409 oz each.

Even better deal if they are 1938 crowns!!! Normally 1938's go for upwards of $150.

I bought some from the same bloke for $29-$30 each awhile back and i no he still has a few.

So i'll see how things go, i was going to wait until the auction to see if crowns come up ect but im not sure if you can get crowns for less then $28 a pop even at the auctions :/
 
Picked up 20 for $29 - ea which i thought was a good deal.

Most are in good nic, but some are a little discolored.

Can anyone give me some tips on a cleaning solution which i can get the real color out?
 
Search on cleaning - there's a few tricks involving cloudy ammonia and bicarb soda in threads on here for cleaning 1966 50c pieces. Auspm is the cleaning guru.
 
Tried the Bi-carb soda and it WORKED A TREAT!

Might try the other steps tomorrow to give them a little but more.

Bah!, you'll never fix 'em. Better off selling them to me cheap and searching for better examples :P

I told old mate to let me no if he gets any more...then ill snap them all up again :P
 
Is/Was he a collector and did he know what he was doing ? If so no probs if not do not go cleaning old coins if you do not know how to grade them. You could be ruining a several hundred dollar coin, dirt and tarnish do not effect value to the collector.

Don't want to sound funny but I would not clean anything until I knew for sure there was no extra value in the items, once cleaned collectors generally keep clear unless is it is a major rarity but even then the true price is compromised considerably.
 
He runs a shop and he has various other 1937's for sale a greater prices.

So i'm guessing he does? Respected dealer i believe (Sorry don't want to give to many hints as the location as i still want my supply if you no what i mean)

I just bought all the ones for $29/pop and mos of them are in good nic, esp with the soda trick.

Finally, i have no idea how to grade coins :/ so i wouldn't have a clue if i stumbled upon a good one.

That would not be fair to the dealer - if you know what WE mean ?! :D
 
This refers to the dealer with whom I spend the most of my fiat money. As soon as the spot price hit $30 the price of 37 crowns went from $30 to $35. With the price of spot dropping to $27 I might have to ask my dealer for a special around $32. However I did notice one in his shop for $25 and I asked why the price was so low. Because it has got a big ding on the edge was his answer.

Bellinvest you are certainly buying at a great price under $30. Stack as many as you can and when the supply runs dry then tell us where you got them. They are sure a good looking coin and when spot gets around the $31 mark again I'm sure that $35 to $40 will be the selling price.

Thanks for the advice!

I did a bit of research before hand and emailed him with the quantity and prices for pre florins, 1966 50c and crowns.

His florins and 50c were above the prices that you can get here. 50c were $12 - ea

But the crowns were a good deal :P

I asked him how many he had and he said 20...i said ill take the lot, cash.

Some old lady in the shop gave me a unusual look at that stage

As for the $10 state series ill shoot him a email Monday and let you no. I picked up circulated $10 state series off here for $20 - ea so if he sells for less then that then i suppose it will be a good deal.
