Collecting 1/2 oz Lunars

I have a question for you all and I'd love some feed back so I can better understand. Lunars are new to me but I've been an avid Panda collector for quite a while relatively.

1/2 Lunars have very low mintage figures compared to the 1 oz coin and a number of them can be had quite inexpensively. So wouldn't now be a good time to collect them because they're inexpensive to obtain and should go up in value a greater percentage than the 1 oz Lunars because of them being more rare? What piece of the puzzle am I missing or I don't understand?

The enjoyment I get from collecting is #1 but I also want to make a good investment.

Please give me some advice, guidance, wisdom...
 
1oz seems to be the preffered size for collecting, hence the higher premium in the secondary market?

I think the higher premium is there because 1oz is a capped mintage and the others aren't
 
With series 1 lunars 1/2 oz impossible to get a full set because they stopped minting them 3 coins before the end of the series. Maybe that is why there is less demand as you will need to purchase proof versions to fill the gaps in your set. With series 2 the 1/2 oz mouse is now over $100 and very hard to find. Also I think the half oz ox is very difficult to get hold of.
 
I have been looking for the 1/2 Ox for about 3 months now, then it will complete my 1/2 oz set.......none to be had out there....:(

just imagine you have few monsters boxes of those :lol: $120 per oz silver :)

Not quite impossible :) it took me 6 months to put this collection of 1/2 oz proofs together.


 
where do you get them :) Just starting mine with the first coin, last year
 
I was talking about the BU bullion coins. They didn't make rat, ox and tiger as a bullion coin, only as Proof Coins. So it is impossible to get a set of the bullion coins, but not the proofs.

Hi alor,I'll give you geographical breakdown,I got 3 from Aussie,4 from Russia,and 5 from Germany.

Germany is your best bet they are really big into all silver coins especially Aussie lunars.Have a look on ebay de I also have a German contact who is selling a few of his lunar coins.I'll pm you his email if you wish.

I'd point out they are fairly expensive.

You might want to collect the 9 1/2oz Bu coins, yes they are not the 12 as they (perth mint dropped the last 3) but they are still a set, because that's all they minted and they are relatively affordable.

I have the 9 1/2 Bu's and they are a lovely set as well IMHO.

Nice collection, did the coins come with COA and original packaging ?
 
Yes apart from a couple which came from a 3 coin set,5 don't have outer cardboard boxes but are cased with coa.

I like to have my nusmismatic coins in display cases as they are far easier to look at and I find the original cases too bulky to display your coins.

I just keep them if I ever decide to sell although I do buy coins without cases its the coins that count IMHO :)

You're absolutely right in a collector point of view, however if you decide to sell for some reason, similar coins missing original packaging and COA will be worth half if not less their value.

Depends on how desperate someone is for a coin, for instance if they only needed 1 coin to complete a set I don't think they would be to worried about original packaging I wouldn't :) I'd pay a full and fair price for it.

Not that I'd ever sell this set it will go to my son someday, he's only 9 and has a reasonable silver collection of his own.

So now is the 1oz Proof set next :) ? Did you start collecting it ?
