When it comes to high valued collectable (or even not so collectable items), they always don't worth much if you look at the base material. And there are always people says these are totally crap and yet there are always people who would pay money for it. The problem is more of a risk. Because it is can be worth a lot of money at one time and suddenly it can worth nearly nothing. So you either willing to take that risk and play in that field or you simply buying it for yourself and so buys and pays what you think is worth the asking price. For those that does not belong to either of these groups, they will think those people who are into it are nut and those things are totally not worth it. And that's just how it is. Everyone needs be their own judge of what is crap and what isn't.

Could we not turn this in to a debate over whether collectible premium is or is not a good thing? I'd much rather discuss which coins those who DO like premium coins think will succeed. I got my fill of never-ending useless debate over at the second hand bullion thread.

Then I am not the only person that did their homework to find out what the mintage was on the Takus(I announced their mintage over there and everyone was shocked). Did you email a rep to find out or has it finally been officially posted somewhere?

Did I? I guess I did. I don't remember that! I do have it in writing from a mint rep. approx 20,000 2011, approx 10,000 2010. At the time she didn't know what the 2012 would be, but that has since been announce at a max of 350k. Though at current sales pace I fail to see how they will accomplish that number, unless there are a lot of sales happening behind the scenes.

So post 2012 takus are not a very good bet because of their high(ish) mintage as compared to pre-2012?

I would have to say if a coin is popular + rare it would have no trouble reaching high price regardless of what it's made of.
Not sure about the Russian coin, I had trouble acquiring it so never really researched it after early 2011. It had great potential at the time though.

I went all in on that coin BEFORE he posted a video about it or had announced his opinion to anyone publicly. I was also watching the quantity drop before the hype he generated had begun. So I know it wasn't just a singular hype wave generated by him. Others clearly saw the value in the 2011 issue, myself included.
That said, I really don't like the 2012 coin and I didn't buy any. So I disagree with him on that one. I don't approve of the entire series, but I definitely approve of the 2011.
But hey, I might be wrong. All I know is that as of now it was one of my best purchases for current resale value.

It's simply beautiful and it's the first coin apmex started offering under a seperate somali wildlife series icon so it wasn't popularly available all year. The 2012 has been available all year and people know about it now. It'll be more readily available.
