Cognac as an Investment

A friend over the years has collected about a dozen bottles of VSOP and XO Cognac
These are well know brands like Hennessy and Martel
She purchased them duty free during her travels and is interested in selling them.
Retail bottles of VSOP seems to be selling for around $80, XO $250+
I am thinking of buying them as an investment if the price is right
Just as a matter of interest what sort of prices would you pay?

I’d probably try and identify the year of bottling.

You might look at batch numbers if the XO is numbered. Some years may attract a premium.

If it is like whisky, then not a lot more is supposed to happen in the bottle. Not sure I agree - when to a whisky convention in Melbourne many years ago and some of the stuff from the 70s was very dark.

They had devastating storms which actually killed a young kid
There hasn't been batch since 2011 or 2012
Until recently, but it hasn't been aged properly.
The latest batch isn't the same
At auction in Moscow recently
1 bottle of Corvosieur went for $220 US
I'm paying $55-$60 a bottle here
2011 batch
So no don't do it

My daughter works at a liquor store so I'd pay cost.
She loves her daddy and hooks me up. Plus the owner is her boyfriend's mom.

Although you could squirrel away alot more Budweiser for that price and no one would ever know if it goes off. It always tastes the same!

I think most of her collection would be at least 10 years old; maybe even 20!
So a safe price to buy a vintage pre 2010 Martel or Hennessy VSOP would be around $50 - $55 a bottle?

I bit the bullet and bought her stash at a fair price!
All VSOP at a decent discount below current Dan Murphy prices
The cognac collection is actually much older than I thought. She couldn't tell me when she got a particular bottle however this collection was collected between 20 - 40 years ago.
The brands include Hennessy, Martell, Courvoisier, Remy Martin and an obscure brand Prince Hubert de Polignac
I intend to flip at least half the collection and I am wondering which of the brands are more collectable?
Much appreciated for any advice!

Investing in those bottles could be a great move, especially if you can get a good deal. Personally, I'd consider paying around $60-70 for VSOP and maybe $200-220 for XO if they're in good condition.

Recently, I had a similar opportunity with a bottle of Hennessy White. A buddy of mine picked up a couple of bottles duty-free during his trip and sold one to me at a fair price. It was a fantastic experience sharing it at a small gathering with friends. The smoothness really stood out and made the evening memorable. So, if you can snag a good price, I'd say go for it!
