For some of us, it doesn't matter if an official mint produces it or not. Some of the best Chinese medals are not made by official mints.
Also, many of the medals made by the official mints are not low mintage (compared to plenty of other medals from un-official mints) nor are they gaining in value...so why even bother buying official mint medals if this is the case?
Clearly many of the official mint medals are under performing medals like the Xi-Shi Holding a Pearl. So just because it is from an un-official mint means nothing to some of us who buy medals because of their aesthetic appeal and beauty.

Xi-Shi Holding a Pearl medal in silver....I am trying to put together the money right now.
Max mintage of 50...really scarce. As far as medals is concerned, this silver medal epitomizes what Chinese medals should be - awesome design, super low mintage, very big, and silver!

As some of you might also be, I am a lover of science and a big fan of the cosmos and celestial bodies....these things just fascinate me immensely.
I am also, as some of you might be, a lover of beauty and beautiful works or art and craftsmanship.
So perhaps it's no surprise that when the two are joined together (science and beauty) in a Chinese medal, it's going to be a big winner with me.
Introducing "Transit of Venus".
But first, a little context of what the Transit of Venus is in astronomy (which is the study of the cosmos):
"Transits of Venus are among the rarest of predictable celestial phenomena and occur in pairs, eight years apart, which are themselves separated by more than a century....the next pair of transits will occur on 1011 December 2117 and in December 2125"

Weight: more than 300 grams
Please keep in mind that these 2 medals are still in the sealed plastic pouch so the medals are not going to look exactly as they would if they were seen without the plastic pouch. I took a number of pictures with the lights in various positions and I selected the pictures in which the refracted light off the pouches was least a visual nuisance.

I cannot authentic the signature BUT it is the designer signature in Chinese character.

I came across the seller on eBay a while back and I knew right there and then I had to buy the set because of the beautiful design, subject matter, and very low mintage. The fact that it was produced by a non-official mint wasn't important to me because I am not buying these medals to flip, but rather to appreciate the craftsmanship for many years.
I will dig up the seller's eBay name...maybe he has another set for sale. I will share that name when I find it.

A more affordable yet beautiful medal is the 2014 65th Anniversary People's Republic of China copper medal. I am not intending to promote any seller by using these pictures, but they are the only one's I have access to. Not as thick as the Xi-Shi or Transit of Venus medals but larger in diameter and priced considerably less.
