was in a random part of town i don't get to very often this afternoon, wandered into the local cash converters, was somewhat taken aback to see about 10 2oz perth mint silver coins in the jewellery cabinet. 2 07 kooks, a s2 tiger and a bunch of s2 rabbits. You hardly ever see bullion coins in cashies.

asked the guy at the counter how much he wanted for them. "$200 each and that's not negotiable"

oh really? that's interesting.

old mate then proceeded to lecture me that silver is $100 an ounce atm and that if they don't sell he'll send them off to get melted and he'll get $100 each for them and he does it all the time. Like actually getting a kinda hostile tone in his voice.

I said to him, i think you'll find that silver is about $28 an ounce at the moment mate, and he talked over me, NO, IT IS $100 an ounce.


was all good, i picked up a couple of cool dvds i was after for $2 each.

well why not offer to sell him silver for half that price? if he can melt it for $100 then surely $50 oz is an absolute bargain?

hmm.. dunno

I guess he did win in the end, you gave him cash for junk dvd's that cost him nothing :)

Far to tempting to loudly call him a liar to his face, demand to see the manager and get an explanation why the flunkies are telling outright lies. Or do a hidden camera sting and really stick it to them.
 
I constantly harass them about they're prices ,
I often pull out the Ipad & show them real prices :D
 
I have one walking distance, i'll pop in and have a look and i'll take some 1oz coins and see how much they offer me tommorow and let you all know, i'm guessing they will be quite sharp on the price of silver when the're buying, we'll see.

I asked my local one,I got told they don't buy silver :rolleyes:
They pay 40%-50% on gold :lol:

The obvious think to do is take your whole stack there are ask him if he'll take $90oz... fair profit for him of $10oz. Let him haggle you down to $80oz if you must ;)
 
yeah i was actually tempted to educate the guy, i even had 2oz dragons for $71 at bullion bourse brought up on my phone to show dude, but honestly, the dude was very deep in his own delusional state. I pick up cheap silver jewellery all the time from a different cashies. Like i said, i got some rad dvds for $2 each. I just let it go. Strange for a dude who's primary work role is to know the value of stuff to be so wildly disconnected. This wasn't some 15yo, this was a manager dude in his 50s.

I asked at one place at one place if I could buy something for spot plus 5% and the guy said "Ha! I get spot plus 5% just from the refinery!"

"Really? Do you buy 400oz bars?

"What? Gold bars?

"Yeah. I'll buy them at spot, you sell them for spot plus 5% and we split the difference 50-50. Waddaya reckon?"

"No".

"Yeah, didn't think so. Good luck shifting that junk".


At some point in a conversation it should become obvious that the customer knows what they're talking about.

That's when they tell you they already have heaps of it out back, and they really don't need anymore ...but they'll offer to buy it from you for $10 -just cos they're good blokes.
 
and when mania strikes they'll be doubling spot and selling the lot to the masses.
 
There is nothing I enjoy more than walking into a cashies and picking up something completely under valued. I once picked up a pair of $450 diving fins in the boogie board flipper bin for $30. Had the biggest grin on my face when he put them in the bag.
 
actually the quality of coles fruit, veg' and meat is much better in more affluent suburbs, but prices are the same.
it's what it takes to sell things in wealthy areas.
had a milk bar in a ritzy area and all they ever come in to buy was milk and bread.
then had a milk bar in a slummy area, very low income earners, they'd were the best customers, the poorer they are the more likely they'll spend all there money on junk.

yeah like i said, i wasn't going in there looking for bullion, and was quite surprised to see the coins there. Especially lunars.
