Ordered the new ATB the other day and as usual ordered a few other things while I was at it. Among the "other things" were a Canadian Wolf and Red Tailed Hawk. Been quite some time since I've bought anything from the Canadian Mint. I think the coins are VERY well done, hopefully they don't have the Canada milk spot disease. But, based on these, I'll grab a few more of this series, damn sure cheap enough these days.

While I'm at it, here's my take on the latest ATB bullion version. Sorta nice I guess in a symmetrical sanitary way. I think real settler cabins weren't quite so neat and "squared away" as we said in the US Marine Corps. This looks like a cabin specified in a 2,000 page government contract, not something built by a hardscrabble desperate family in the middle of nowhere out of whatever materials they could find before a killing winter set in.

I dont like the Red tailed hawk because the feathers in one wing are just too uniform and the other wing err what wing?

the uniformity in the wing feathers don't bother me too much and as for the other wing I guess upon looking at it, it can appear odd. but what you're seeing the leading edge of the other wing.

I do feel as though they could have chosen a better flight position for that bird on that coin.

Like this, some of the light has to be coming from a strong angle to create the shadows that define the coin.

Very nice tom. One of the best pictures of silver coins I have seen online. What kind of bulbs do you use? I would like to learn have to take so nice pictures of my own coins ;-)
 
Nice set up, I have taken quite a few pictures of coins and he is so right, the angle of the lighting make a Hugh difference, I don't have anything like his set up but now I think i will build something similar.

I would also like to know what light bulbs you are using, as some of my pictures have a yellowish tinge to them .
 
Very nice! I have a larger photo box I use for ebay items. I may invest in a smaller one for coins. I only use 3 lamps though, I need to build a rig around it like you have!
 
The bulbs are 100 watt equivalent 5000K daylight compact florescent. Used to use halogen but they got HOT!

I do use a DSLR camera, the brand I've learned is not really important. But the lens is, a 100mm f2.8 prime (not zoomable) Macro. I do other types of photography and none of my other lenses will take these pictures.

Last night I shot a couple of Kookaburras that I wanted to try to better my previous efforts.
