Canada $20 Maple Leaf at face value?

Hi,

I've only recently started stacking silver for investment, having collected various world coins for a while based on aesthetics for the most part.

I came across this product recently

Apparently it is being issued in Canada at face value, which would seem like pretty good value for a 99.99% pure silver coin

So my question is, for those in the know, what do you think of this one?

I love it wish we could go exchange fiat money for same face value silver.

Hey mate, there a beautiful coin. Off the mints site they were limited to 200,000 limit 3 per house hold only available to Canadian Citizens. You had to fill out some paperwork and register in order to get it (unless you walked into the mint) They sold out super fast and were selling as high as $60 right after but thats dropped down to 30-40 range
 
Any idea how much silver is in the coin, never mind ! Google

The 99.99% pure silver coin measures 27 mm in diameter and weighs 7.96 g. They'll even ship it to your door for free.
 
I wonder if this is a one off experiment or the start of something more interesting, it certainly sounds like a smart move by the Canadians.

In the UK the banks would sell 5 cupronickel commemorative coins for face value.

In Australia they sell a thousand different designs of base metal coins for $12 each.

As far as value for money I know which ones I would support

Actually, the Royal Mint usually sells the 5 coins in a "special presentation packaging" aka a piece of coloured cardboard for 9.99.

That works out at over AUD$15 which is worse value for money than the RAM's $1 coins in "special presentation packaging".
 
I think it's good in that you can buy a $20 silver coin for $20 (if you're Canadian).

I think it's bad in that $20 buys you a lot more bullion silver than what is in that coin.

I would still take it over paper/polymer - same currency value much prettier and has a fondle factor.

You can pick them up at the bank without the packaging at face value. I fact when I got the 80th bday of the queen mother it came in pretty packaging at face value, of course back in those days five pounds was a lot of money.

According to wiki Five pound coins are legal tender but are intended as souvenirs and are almost never seen in circulation. The Royal Mint states frankly "most retailers will refuse to accept them". However, the coins may be spent at all post offices. The coins are sold by the Royal Mint at face value and also, with presentation folders, at a premium to that face value. The 2010 coins, with such folders, were sold for 9.95 each.

Last time I went home they had stopped selling coins in the post office and it was all mail order.

But that is a little off topic!

Anyway, legal silver coins available at face value are a great idea and I want some in Australia.

I wonder how many of the Canadian coins will ever make it into circulation and how long they would stay there, Gresham's Law anyone?
 
Thanks guys - I see Talisman are selling these Canadian $20 coins for $39, while Euro Collections have them for only $22. Mind you, ECI has a restriction of 2 per customer, whereas Talisman are encouraging people to buy in bulk with discounts offered...still, I think a couple of these would be good enough for me :)

Slightly off topic, but is there still any current-issue circulating legal tender in the world with silver content?

Not talking about $1 ASEs - I mean like genuine circulating coinage with a face value higher than the silver content.
 
I think there are at least 2 states in Malaysia ( Kelantan & other one - forgot its name ) which have silver and gold circulating as currency.

Dirham and Dinar

Are they actually circulating? I was under the impression that they weren't legal tender, I could be wrong, I looked into them a while back when there was first talk of the Islamic States producing their own coins for international trade between themselves. I don't think it went anywhere.
 
I think they faced some opposition by the central bank of Malaysia, but they still circulate amongst some people there and in some shops.

not 100 % sure either

The Islamic Dinar and Dirham do not exist for all practical purposes. A small number of demonstration coins have been made (the ones shown in all the marketing material) and a handful of actual coins have been sold and subsequently stashed away, but no, they don't circulate freely.

That's not to say the situation won't change in the future, but for now they're just curiosities with an interesting back story.

There was an Islamic Mint, can't find the website now but there is an article on it http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Micro-Nations/Islamic-Mint.htm I was keen to pick up a few examples but it involved sending documents all over the place and I never got round to it.

I wouldn't mind a set but we may not have to wait too long anyway!
 
I own 1 Silver Dirham from Kelantan, great looking coin with a nice premium on top.

Would love to get the 10 Dirham or the 20 Dirham.
