Where to look?

Are there any bargains? Or similar prices to here in aus etc?

Heading to Thailand and wouldn't mind having a look...

Is spot price spot price or are there legit bargains in lower socio economic nations?

Dont bother looking for silver over in Thailand mate, they really only care about gold here.

You can find crafted silver like jewellery etc, but of course that trades above spot.

The gold in Thailand is almost exclusively 'Thai gold' which is 23kt, and you generally buy it in chains by the 'baht' which is a unit of measure (basically half a troy ounce). Premiums on these 23kt chains run at under 5%.

one can later sell Thai "Baht Gold"back to the shop for the current spot price, Thais recognize the value of precious metals, but much prefer Gold to Silver.

how about gold bar ? like 10 gr ? one thing that i noticed is difference in colour between thailand gold bar, and indonesian gold, and perth mint bar.

should there be a difference ?

Well I know Thai gold gets its colour because it is generally alloyed with a mix of silver and bronze. A different mix of metals will give different colours to pure 24kt bullion.

Also the above post regarding buy backs is correct. The one proviso is that it is always best to sell back to the shop you brought from if possible, as they then recognise their own hallmark. They may ask to test the chain if they are unfamiliar with the hallmark. The gold shops often loan money using the chains as collateral, and this is the primary purpose for most people here to own gold.

Also not so sure on selling the 23kt chains in the western market, I dare say it is difficult.

Its the same story the world over - you'll get what you pay for.

You should also remember that you are in their country and chances are that you will easily be out foxed by clever business operators whom make a living from the tourist dollar.

seeing that you are in thailand as well..

i bought a gold bar, .9999 in beauty gems... at spot price + premium couple years ago...

however the color difference there makes me suspect that there must be something in there as well.. is that a standard to get a gold like that over there ?

i can post a picture if it is interest for anyone

I have not played with any pure gold bullion purchased in Thailand/Asia, only western bullion. The only stuff I have experience with out here is the aforementioned 23kt gear... If you put a pic up I can have a look, but if you have doubts it is going to be better if you take it into a shop that has an XRF machine and get it tested.

I find silver has much bigger premium in some Asian country, probably due to liquidity (?)

i went to gold stackers, and the boys over there run a check on my bar, both pass the test.. so i am happy chap now..

Why not buy online? Why carry ounces on the plane back home?
Be aware of the fact that some countries have limitations when taking precious metals out or in... (at the border).
