Brexit The Movie

Very good. I've thought for a while that Britain should exit, perhaps they will.

from sovereignman.com

On 23 June 2016, this British citizen will be voting to leave the European Union.

To me it's clear: the EU has not only become too big for its own good, it's too big to do hardly anything good.

Back in 1975 when the UK first confirmed membership in the EU (when it was called the European Economic Community), it made sense.

Britain has always thrived on international trade, and the EU promised more trade.

But that's not what happened. The EU didn't turn into a peaceful, efficient, multi-national trading bloc that enables commerce and prosperity.

Rather it has become an ever-expanding, unaccountable bureaucracy ruling over vastly disparate nations who are increasingly at odds with one another.

And it is precisely the size of this Leviathan that's the problem something that was first identified several decades ago by economist Leopold Kohr.

Kohr was an Austrian Jew who only narrowly escaped Hitler's Germany just before the outbreak of the Second World War.

He had been born in Oberndorf in central Austria, a village of just 2,000 or so.

And Oberndorf's tiny size came to play a crucial role in Kohr's thinking about the wealth of nations.

Kohr's premise was simple: when you get too big, you start having serious problems.

This applies to political unions, from the Roman Empire to the EU, as well as to companies.

Even Warren Buffett has warned that large companies will eventually find it difficult to grow.

Kohr graduated in 1928 and went off to study at the London School of Economics with the likes of fellow Austrian Friedrich von Hayek.

In September 1941, Kohr began writing what would become his masterwork, 'The Breakdown of Nations'.

He wrote that instead of expanding, Europe should be shrinking back into small political regions (like Switzerland) with a commitment to private property rights and local democracy.

"We have ridiculed the many little states," wrote Kohr sadly, "now we are terrorised by their few successors."

Simply put, size creates unavoidable limits... and problems.

And as the European Union has grown ever larger, it smashes horribly into Kohr's thesis.

We can see this with the spate of problems in Europe ranging from horrific youth unemployment to major border crises to negative interest rates across the continent.

Of all the world's population centers, Europe is the slowest growing (i.e. most rapidly shrinking) in the world.

The promises of growth and prosperity proved hollow. Yet the Eurocrats want to give Europeans even more: more regulation, more negative interest rates, more size.

Perhaps ECB Governing Council member Vitas Vasiliauskas sums this up the best from his comments last week:

"Markets say the ECB is done, their box is empty. But we are magic people. Each time we take something and give to the markets a rabbit out of the hat."

Vasiliauskas is the perfect embodiment of the EU bureaucracy: they believe they are special people capable of performing miracles.

I thought this issue, and the excellent film, might inspire a bit more comment folks.

Britan should exit the EU imo. Why leave their future in the hands of the suicidal EU dictatorship from Brussels. Look what they allowed to be done to their EU nations with these millions of non-assimilated Muslims that bring nothing but trouble and rape welfare money.

Whether they are in Brussels or London, it doesn't change the nature of those who lord over the people.

I watched this today, co-incidentally before you resurrected the thread :)

It was good, though I thought it could be better. A lot of talking head one-liners. Maybe from people Brits would know, but it seemed to rely a lot more on opinions rather than just focusing on facts (though there were some good facts put forward). Also, some of the examples and analogies were a bit poor. The umbrella guys were cringe-worthy.

But it got the message across. For me I'd be voting out just on the basis of the EU becoming undemocratic, bureaucratic and over-regulatory.

What I do find very interesting is that (outside this movie) it seems like the far left and the far right actually agree on Brexit. I think this is an example of the old left - right paradigm of class warfare being broken down. This is going to be a vote of establishment authoritarianism vs democracy and freedom.

I think the interesting angle is whether the PTB will allow the 'Exit' case to win. They quelled the Scotland exit.

How would they stop it?

They've already called the referendum. Aside from rigging the poll, do you think they'd be capable of denying Brexit if the people vote for it. That would be a dangerous game....

I've looked up the betting markets and as of this moment, Brexit is considered only about 21-22% chance of happenning. Market expects a voter turnout of about 60-65% with an estimate of around 55% voting to remain. (Markets on this are surprisingly liquid!)

There is an old saying in politics that you never call for a vote unless you already know what the outcome will be. I wonder if they have called this now because they are confident they can win it now and then they'll be able to put the issue to bed for good.....whereas if they wait much longer it will get worse and holding a referendum later is even riskier?

Kind of rhymes with my thoughts on the Liberals forcing a DD....they can still win right now, but if the economy all goes to hell in the next few months like its threatening to do (deflation etc) then who knows?

Ok...I'll put my tinfoil hat away for now. Just a couple of things to mull over. :p

If enough see it and if they count properly and if they don't pull a terror scare the night before.

Ft poll of polls to the 19th of May

Cameron is coming out with more outlandish claims everyday re Brexit including WW3.I just hope people of the UK see through this c--p & vote leave, I think it will be extremely close as a high proportion of over 50's will actually bother to vote & most of them are firmly in the Brexit camp.

Looks like Brexit has received a shot in the arm with this piece in the Mirror. This will be a gathering storm over the next month.

Major leak from Brussels reveals NHS will be 'KILLED OFF' if Britain remains in the EU

Hundreds of papers from the secretive trade talks between the US and EU have been released online.

They appear to confirm fears that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership talks between Brussels and Washington will, when ratified, lead to the health service being privatised or dismantled.

The documents, obtained by Greenpeace Netherlands, include a US proposal to have a committee with representatives from Washington and Brussels to meet each year "to review state-owned enterprises and monopolies" which would include the NHS.

The committee would meet annually and would not be guaranteed a representative from Britain.

But it would still be able to review state-run services in this country. Its duties would include checking that state services do not "distort" the market.

One section of the papers makes it clear that the EU and America would seek eventually to end all forms of state intervention in competition with the private sector.

The report states that if Britain remains in EU the NHS will be sold off and privatised

It says: "The parties acknowledge that anti-competitive business practices and state interventions have the potential to distort the proper functioning of markets and undermine the benefits of trade liberalisation."

Opponents of TTIP have long argued that including healthcare in the treaty will force the privatisation of the NHS or at least make the process impossible to reverse.

EU officials claim they will have wording that allows for the NHS to be protected but have so far failed to provide a full exemption.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister David Cameron has refused to ask for an exemption while trying to persuade British voters to back the Remain campaign in the EU Referendum.

Pro-Brexit campaigners have long warned that if Britain remains in the EU it will see its health service privatised and the NHS broken up.

This will not be tolerated by the vast majority of the British population and if true and if publicised as such Britain has already left the EU! :)

All British people are born with one thing in common a "national insurance number" and they will never surrender this to privatisation because its long been the world leader in NHS for "all"

Even though if you look deeply into things it is a no brainer for the UK to leave the EU.
I still think it will be very close as the scare mongering by Cameron & the remain camp is reaching the average punter on the street who is only concerned that their holiday in Spain will cost more( as according to Cameron the will fall by 15% against the euro LOL) or they believe their house price will fall, again according to Cameron.

Funny before this referendum industry & the government were complaining about the strong pound & ridiculous house prices, pricing ordinary workers & youngsters out of the market, now it is yet another U turn by Cameron & Co.
I'm praying we get out of this corrupt s--t fest.

People are blinded by purposely introduced distractions and many wont bother voting or even care what their vote may stand for!

I used to moan about young kids and their constant gaming and social media that was numbing them from reality and then I lost my internet for 24 hours and I spent 23 hours 59 mins franticly and frustratingly trying to make sense of a telco,s call centre staffs accents and useless explanation attempts! This led me to realise just how far down the rabbit hole I have fell along with the youth I keep complain about! :)
