Best Silver (or Gold) Coin For Birth Present???

Hi Stackers - a good friend of mine is having a baby and I just wanted to ask some opinions on what coins is best to give as a birth present. I was thinking maybe a 2011 rabbit but maybe someone has some better ideas.....

It would be nice to get something boxed/cased/carded rather than just hand over a coin.

Ideas? Opiniions? Experiences?

I went with a high relief silver 1oz Kangaroo last year for a similar thing. Went down well. Nicely packaged.

I have had 3 nieces give birth to babies within a year or so. They all got 1oz tigers and rabbits.
Not necessary for them to be boxed. My wife just wrapped the encapsulated coins nicely and everyone appreciated the coins.

+1 on lunars, preferably proof ones since they'll be treasured more with the box and the cert, human mentality I believe.

Or... carded Koalas!!!!!!! *hint hint hint* ;)
 
Definitely a Lunar coin from their birth year - pick one based on budget. You could always go for a proof, but whenever I've given silver coins as a gift the response has been positive.

Nicer to give a Lunar coin that relates to their birth year than just a 2011 dated Koala etc, and a precious metals gift will make an impression.
 
Yeah Lunars rule! I guess the reason for preferring proofs is because with a presentation case it becomes harder to lose the coin...

I've spoken to people that found coins at the bottom of drawers, behind bookshelves and what not, guess it comes down to the person.
 
Well I gave a coloured rabbit to my niece as well as the mint year set. The coin was in a presentation box and looked OK, I wouldn't like coloured ones myself but it was all the post office had. My sister assured me that it would be put up somewhere high where the child can't play with it.

We made sure we gave a load of other things too like a bag and dummies and nappies, that sort of thing.

A coin is a crap present for a baby but the idea is that when they get to college they can sell all the crap presents that strange unlce jis gave them and get something they really want.

We will be giving an ounce for every birthday and Christmas present along with something the child might actually like, such as a teddy bear etc.

I would like to give the child some encapsulated coins so she can play with them and stack them but at the end of the day, I would rather she had a mint condition lunar dragon to sell than a scuffed one that she actually enjoyed playing with.
 
I got my godson and goddaughter each a gold sovereign (From 1800's) and a 1/2oz clownfish.
 
There's a good point. I know a lot of people who have Sovereigns antiquated (-100 years) from their birth. You may need to do some searching, but it IS possible....

Incidentally, if anyone has an 1885 Sovereign, I'm willing to make a nice offer for it :D
 
Make sure you check they are really a Rabbit year because the Chinese Lunar calendar doesn't start on 1st January :P

Could be a Tiger if they were born in January.

I'm sure plenty of people have spare 1oz bullion rabbits lying around :P
