Australian taxpayers to fund political parties.

I believe that this was discussed on the SBS news tonight (28/5/13) but I didn't get to hear it well at the time. For the info of anyone who wants to find this on SBS's website.

It's probably important. The debate of this in Parliament was so rowdy what I did take from the news item was that the Deputy Speaker threw out many members of both sides of Parliament from the House, including the main proponent of the Bill, the current Attorney General.

Interestingly, the ticker on Sky News shortly before midday was spruiking something on the lines that the Greens want to limit the amount of donations political parties could accept.

Sadly, that was the only "news" I got during the day on this, but it seems to relate to the discussions you folks are mentioning above?

This was all I could find on the Sky News site: http://www.skynews.com.au/national/article.aspx?id=875639

All the reports seem to be concentrating on the Donation-Disclosure angle.

What shocked me was the part about the parties taking funds from taxpayers. There should be much more discussion of this, IMO.

Not 100% certain, but i think this has been going on for decades.

Only the amounts are in question.

And the BIGGEST trick is to grant $100,000+++ to a union and get that $100,000+++ back as an exempt contribution to the socialist party.

The grants to unions run into MILLIONS every year!

The Democratic Labor Party senator John Madigan is a former blacksmith who would like shops to close at midday on Saturday so families can spend more time together.

He is a personable chap, but as of Tuesday Madigan probably won't be invited for scones with any of his upper house colleagues. Not this Saturday arvo, nor next.

''This place is rotten to the core I'd like to see it implode,'' he told a Victorian newspaper on the subject of the 43rd parliament.
''They wonder why people hate their bloody guts and we have a high informal vote.''

And then: ''I've run over better rabbits than these people.''

$1 per vote from taxpayers to the parties. One of the most ridiculous things I've heard today.

Good cash cow when you got compulsory voting thrown in as well.

Paul Murray had a big rant about this last night.
Then interviewed numnutz Oakeshott about it.
Gave me a chuckle....

Brilliant! Thanks.

I wonder how the pigs will divide up the informal votes? Over 600,000 in the last election. Times by 2 for upper and lower house and that's >$1.2 million in party funding up for grabs - far too tasty to simply ignore.

What about the banks and corporations...They have an each way bet don't they? 60k on the fav and 40 to the red men just in case of an upset. Then they pay less tax..Come on be fair OC..

They are driven by their own vested interests...Unions, business and now government.

True, but the money comes via the taxpayer to the politburo, then from the politburo to the unions, and then from the unions to the politburo as a 'donation".

It is just one huge money laundering scam.

The Banks money comes from the shareholders - ME!

Next thing you know they'll have a gold coin donation to get into the voting booth.
