Royal Australian Mint releases one-off Australian 'quarter' coin to honour war veterans

FOR THE first time Australia will get its own 25 cent coin, but you'll probably have a better chance of finding one in a collection than in your change at the local corner shop.

The Royal Australian Mint will produce more than one million "quarters" in an exclusive one-off release and although they will be legal tender, the unique gold coins are unlikely to end up in circulation as general currency.

The new coins will feature designs based on photos of the significant military moments in Australia's history and will be made available as part of Anzac Day commemorations.

The commemorative coins are a joint initiative between News Corp, the Royal Australian Mint, Legacy and Westpac.

Mint product development officer Dion Buck said it is the first time a 25 cent piece has been released as legal tender in Australia.

Unlike America's silver-coloured quarters, the Australian quarter will be gold-coloured with the Mint securing a Nordic Gold blank from Europe made from copper and aluminium similar to the material used as the middle of euros.

and cheap:

Start your Learn the Legend collection with your free Gold 25c coin and collector album when you buy The Sunday Telegraph on April 10. There are 13 others to collect including three more gold 25c coins for just $3 each when you buy The Daily and Sunday Telegraph.

But, incidentally, a rather loose use of the term 'gold'

Gold coloured implies gold plated. There are plenty of gold plated coins being flogged on Ebay.
I guess the term 'gold coloured' just plays on ignorance. Related strategy seen on Ebay.

I don't think the general public thinks of "gold coins" as actual gold, more like the $1 and $2 "gold coins" which people know are just base metals.

Awareness that so called "gold coins" are made of base metals is a good start to identifying real gold. :)

+1

Gold is just the colour they look.

I wonder if they are using blanks from another currency.

I am sure our war veterans are very honoured for the Mint and Courier Mail to be selling a 25 cent coin that can't be spent for only $3. It's what they would have wanted.

Yes I heard on the Radio they sourced these blanks from somewhere in Europe, can't remember where though.

Except my 26 year old Tassie mate. All along he thought they were pure gold, even after I told him how much an ounce of the good stuff costs

Checked with my local newsagent and he's just received all the advert "blurb" for this offer. It will come out with the Herald Sun same dates.

Seems an OK cost, and an album as well .. I'm in. :)

EDIT: oh, and these coins all come on cards. Album and set are named ANZAC to Afghanistan

Conflicting info. to my last post ( no RAM Rolls ) ...

Saw a dealer advertising, now taking orders for a September delivery of the full set of RAM Rolls for $239.

Can you please post the link.

Hard to find now, but I bought 2 sets of coins which include todays 25c through to next weeks two 25c coins.

I only need the last 6 coins to complete each set which I should get from my supplier next weekend. :)

The 'quarter' isn't the thing that annoys me the most regarding this set, it's that the cover of the folder says 'military moments which shaped our country'. It should be 'military moments that shaped our country'. I should be surprised that a newspaper could get that wrong but sadly I'm not.
