Australia: Where the good life comes at a price

In season I can buy organic berries for $10-15/kg, and as low as $5/kg for "jamming" berries.

If I buy at the market/supermarket then they are $8-12 per punnet (125g?).

They can sell it for such a low price as they have reduced their labour costs and eliminated transport costs. There seems to be a bit of competition in that area too which means they have to compete on price with other farmers.

I like to make a day out of it as it's a nice area to visit so don't care if I spend a bit on petrol... and with a large freezer I can buy multiple kilos of berries in the one trip.

Where??? I tried to pick some berries and was told public not allowed as we may sue if we are injured. I said i would happily sign a waiver and it was of no use... We are ripped off in oz with the price of old berries that when purchased are well past their best before dates.

Going slightly off tangent to what you're discussing Hawkeye, but one can readily argue - among other things - that the trading while insolvent aspect should be a crime.

I've heard this before and I believe it's Rothbard's view, but I'm not so sure. I don't want to drag the thread any further off topic, we should discuss this in a FRB thread, because I think it would be interesting to examine it.
You said you were going to start a thread ages ago on FRB ,

I think the best thing to do is someone email the reserve bank & get the exact details . If they will give you that information is another story .

It might be easier to give them your maths & ask them if its correct .

Why? I already know I'm right.

Yes, it's wikipedia but the Fed reserve sources are at the bottom for anyone who wants to go through them. I just boiled it all down in the simplest way I could to help understanding.

This is not going to be popular .

I think that oz isnt such a bad place to live if you want a quality of life . We do have a decent lifestyle some exceptional food clean air & if you have a job you can live a good life & have most things in life you want Standards are very high in oz for everything . something we take for granted at times .
Even if your on welfare you can survive & have better food & shelter than a lot of third world countries can have if they have a full time job .

While i agree the cost of utilities taxes etc are over the top there is no reason you cant have a great life .

Everyone on this forum has extra cash to buy PMs be thankful you live in a country where you have that choice. a lot dont even in oz .You are in the percentage of people that are smart enough with your money to have spare cash to buy luxuries .& if your smart enough to do that theres nothing stopping you from taking it to the next step it just wont happen overnight

Not sure why this would unpopular , but as we all know, just because it's true does t make it popular or even acceptable. This is all true, but my concerns are more for the consequences of this as a result of policies being implemented now, both by the retads we have in gubmint here and o.s.

No worries. As long as we got bbqs and beer she'll be right mate.
Theres plenty of happy locals & people lining up to live in australia so it cant be too bad .

its the bbqs and beer

They are a big plus, although the country shoppers/ pretend refugees might be more interested in our exceptionally( by comparison ) social security system.
And for the pcr's , yes, there are also genuine refugees.

I agree with you that it is a good place to live and you can be very happy. For now.

But over the last couple of decades it has been built more on debt than anything else and that is unsustainable. At the same time you've got a downward trend in the amount of freedom we have as individuals.

Both of these things have to be addressed if Australia is going to continue to be a good place to live. Because, history shows that many good places develop into not so good places after awhile. The trend should be concerning to any Australian that claims to love their country. Prosperity creates the opportunity for a large government presence. And things more often than not go steadily downhill from there. There are a lot of people in this world who are champing at the bit to tell other people what they are and aren't allowed to do. The types who for whatever reason don't enjoy life, so they want to make everyone else miserable too. You know what they say, misery loves company. Give them sufficient levels of power and authority and that's what they'll do (are doing).
