"The ranking, which provides scores for lifestyle challenges in 140 cities worldwide, shows that since 2009 average liveability across the world has fallen by 0.7%, led by a 1.3% fall in the score for stability and safety," the report notes.
"While this may seem marginal it highlights that over 50 of the cities surveyed have seen declines in liveability over the last five years."

Melbourne, Australia, topped the list as the most liveable city in the world, with Vienna placing second, just above Canada's top cities.

1. Melbourne, Australia: 97.5
2. Vienna, Austria: 97.4
3. Vancouver, Canada: 97.3
4. Toronto, Canada: 97.2
5. Adelaide, Australia: 96.6
5. Calgary, Canada: 96.6
7. Sydney, Australia: 96.1
8. Helsinki, Finland: 96.0
9. Perth, Australia: 95.9
10. Auckland, New Zealand: 95.7

Bottom line is that most people really don't appreciate how well they have it.

Being born in Canada, I consider this the same as winning the lottery, after all, I could have been born in Iraq, we all just need to look at the big picture.

4 of the top 10 ...not bad .

After 3 years living in asia i have concluded australia is not so bad ...even with all of its faults .

Always dreamed of retiring on a tropical island ...The reality is far from my dreams .

I have a friend from Iraq who is trying to get his family out of Mosul and here to the US. Even though there are no US cities on the top ten list I still feel fortunate to live in such a safe and stable country. I can only imagine what it must be like fleeing from terrorists and leaving all of your world behind.

I agree .The US would be every bit as good as australia or the other countries on the list (in some cases better)Im not sure who does these studies .

Places like Greece and Portugal have those things too - they are not things that help. Minimim wage, on the contrary, completely hinders quality of life.

Besides, Australia and Canada would be high on a similar list of 80 or 100 years ago.

Why?

Western
Christian
Commonwealth
English speaking

And even then we need to replace Christian in general with the more specific: Protestant.

Residents of Vienna, Helsinki, Toronto, Calgary, and Perth may be surprised to learn they are now part of the Pacific Rim ;)

Pacific rim refers to the number on the rim. I was doing my list in decreasing levels of similarity. Western was the most common.

I think Brisbane should be on the list- especially if you take into account weather.

The US isn't a single place - some parts are quite livable, other parts not so much. I remember the first time I went to Detroit in about 1990 I thought the downtown area looked like pictures I'd seen on TV from the Lebanon war in the 80's.
