US passes space mining bill

The US first drafted its first space mining focused bills in September last year, in order to promote the development of a commercial asteroid resources industry for outer space in the United States and to increase the exploration and utilisation of asteroid resources in outer space".

"Any asteroid resources obtained in outer space are the property of the entity that obtained such resources, which shall be entitled to all property rights thereto, consistent with applicable provisions of Federal law," the bill states.

Prior to this bill no legislation existed outlining the rights of companies to resources mined from asteroids, although the issue of lunar mining still remains a contentious one.

Considering nearly none of us own mines here on Earth and rely on large companies to do it all for us, shouldn't make any real difference to the way things are now.

A robotic space lander has surprised scientists by waking up and sending a signal to Earth, seven months after straying into the shadows of a comet, where they feared it might be marooned for ever.

The European Space Agency said on Sunday it had received signals from the lander, named Philae, late on Thursday, when it began communicating with the team on the ground for the first time since it went into emergency hibernation after a botched landing on the comet in November.

Cool example how much can go wrong out there... The big news here is that a tiny fraction of a data packet made it back to earth for a few seconds of TX until the thing run out of power again.
Big Deal, I suppose.

I wonder how much more energy intensive mining would be when the experts can barely scrape together enough power to make a few experiments and send some garbled data back to earth.

The first heart transplant patients lasted hours to days, but now it is almost routine.
Same principle - first stand, then steps, eventually an Olympic runner???
 
We and our kids will all be long long gone before anyone starts starcrafting an asteroid. I cant believe this thread is still going and people are still talkig about it this.

A sensible, apparently sane, apparently intelligent, Associate Professor of Chemistry I know believes that crocodiles prove that evolution is a fantasy and that the universe is created by his God. There is no "arguing" with some people. I also know some people who still believe that the moon landings took place on a sound stage - where do you stand on that?
It's a good thing that the off-spring of deniers are not prevented from reaping the rewards of the dreamers, else there's be some serious gnashing of teeth - imagine all the people who wouldn't be allowed to use radios or TVs or motor cars or electricity, even.
The future is always in doubt until it happens - up till then it is in the hands of dreamers.

Dude, come on! Some awesome things have been done in space when budget permits.

The Americans took a car to the the Moon and hooned around in it. There's currently a nuclear powered remote controlled vehicle on Mars. In a few weeks a probe will be flying past Pluto.

And don't forget that time a huge space station was launched in the 70's where astronauts could do space gymnastics in their underpants.

Asteroid believed to be carrying up to 90 million tons of platinum in its core, as well as other rare and precious materials, is about to swoosh past our planet.

The platinum-rich asteroid officially named 2011 UW158, is 452 meters by 1,011 meters in size and will pass Earth at a distance of an estimated 2.4 million kilometers.
