Knowing little about numismatics, I'm interested to hear opinions as to which classes have potential for investment appreciation.

I read somewhere that buying old aussie sovereigns and half sovereigns is a good place to start, since many go for around spot.
I'm not able to / interested in spending thousands on single coins without having a good eye

In terms of sets, I have seen some sets of silver/copper aussie pre decimal coins.
What sort of potential are there in those?

I'm thinking of buying some that are largely complete apart from the expensive ones, and hold for the long term.

how easy would they be to dispose of when the time came?

Any thoughts?

I saw that one as well WOW I am a Sov collector but nothing like that.

As for entering the field research like anything is the key. Being a collector is different to an investor in this area. If investing I would be looking at buying key rarities and quality as these will appreciate a lot more. Think of it like Diamonds you can get a heap of stones to equal a carat cheaper than you can buy a 1 carat diamond (all being equal in grades) this is due to rarity. So go quality over quantity :)
 
FWIW, here's a brand new chart that shows how scarce Chinese coins have performed compared to gold and silver over the last five years. This chart covers only Panda coins with populations under 2,000 not the average bullion coin. You would have to compare this performance to that of numismatic items from other countries to decide what's best for you.
