Anyone here stack post 46 shillings or florins?

Asking because I bought a big batch off ebay and was wondering if worth stacking as an alternative to 1966 50s, as lower premium and coins are generally still in better condition that most-pre 46 coinage.

So are they worth stacking ... or is off to the melting pot for them ?

But being serious ,Peter Davis today told me he is beginning to stack florins , just because he likes them . ;)
Got the same vibe from Peter Strich today .
 
I still wouldn't clean them in 10 years the premiums could be huge for Numis in this area. There are some rare dates as well. So check them out. Film Canister storage I like :)

The common crap ones I would though :)
 
I reckon if you have the space for storage, go for it. If silver does go to the moon, even your little post 3d will be worth having.
And I would never clean any pre decimal coin. I like to see the original luster or patina on a coin, it gives the coin character and almost tells a story about its life. I find that part interesting but thats just me :)

what happened to silver is silver is silver ? what was meant was 999 is silver if it has another metal with it then its copper zinc... its not silver then ?
 
Patina is nice, dirt and grease is not so nice, I clean that off after checking for key dates, varieties and error coins.

When I first started stacking pre dec it was about 10% less than spot, recently it was selling just below spot and I have seen some selling for spot and others being offered for over spot.

I have 23 kg of the stuff, I would prefer the pre 46 but it is harder to find and more expensive to buy. I am not actively buying any more, but I still get a few here and there. The florins are more popular than the 6d or 3d.

Hit the nail on the head.

I'm in the same boat as him - clean them up and put them away. I wouldn't even bother with the Numi side of things unless it was a rare issue or a mis-strike


If you're in this for the 'long haul' then buying the smaller fractionals (by weight) is actually quite intelligent.

Ask yourself how often you buy gold sovereigns nowadays, yet alone full 1oz coins.

Florins are a government issue coin with almost no premium on them at all. Absolute friggen bargain for any stacker, especially those on a smaller budget.

Hi,
i just would like to point out for those who might be interested, the three slightly rare dates in the post predecimal coins is the 1956 FLORIN , 1946 DOT(perth mint, the extra dot is infront of the word SHILLING on the rams head side) Shilling and the 1956 Shilling.

I personally collect all the predecimal coins, couldnt resist them :D. As i've been collecting for the last 25 years it was a added bonus when silver and gold shot up it increased some of my collection by 400% as i was collecting everything from copper-silver-gold. hehe GOLD in YR2000 i still could remmember sovereigns where $110 each , off topic slightly $200 gold coins @ $200 each, now that was good times

Silver is Silver in my opinion!

I feel that your silver stack should be as diverse as possible. Im like gold member in Austin Powers but with silver "I like the shmell of it, the tashte, the texture.....i like gooooooooooooold"
Ill stack it any way it comes.
If at one point we need to trade our silver for bread, milk, fuel or clean water then those Florins will be very useful indeed.
 
So, I guess I just don't get it but what is with cleaning coins?!? Why must they be shiny? If I wasn't in the know on silver I might suspect they were fake. Old coins look more authentic. I mean, how dirty were they, did they smell funny?

Although this may simply indicate that I don't have lots of kgs of junk I love to clean my old coins (using his method he suggested once in his youtube vids). I the shine of clean silver and I like to fondle my junk so I hate when it's all greasy or you can't see the detail. In some respects what's the point of getting the most reflective metal if it's grotty (tarnish I don't mind just the greasy crud on old junk silver I can't stand).

Mind you since I got on of Sa_Bogan's small 50 grammers, I've been playing with that instead.

Thanks for the videos, but if you have pre-decimal coins in good nick with little wear, is cleaning them in cloudy ammonia then bicarb going to devalue them.

Is there a better way to remove just the dirt on the coin which wont devalue them.
