Anyone else just get a huge power bill?

Hey all,

I've just received the electricity bill for the small 2 bedroom flat that me and my wife are renting
And it's $500! The last bill was $270.

I just don't understand what could of caused this huge increase! We don't watch TV and heat the flat with a small oil heater
For a couPle of hours each night.

Has anyone else experienced a huge increase in there bill? Is this a result of the carbon tax?

in Qld our bill will go up by 20%... 10% Carbon theft and 10% electricity company theft. Lucky we voted some of that carbon theft back to us with a solar system
 
Jimmy,

Any chance you could let us know how much of the difference was to usage and how much to price increase? They should advise you of total power consumption for the current & previous bill.

If it is mostly a usage spike then worth investigating if you think is wrong.

Many moons ago I had a unit in Sydney and a similar thing happened, usage doubled from one quarter to the next.

After months of complaining to the energy company during which they repeatedly fobbed us off and told us we must be using additional appliances such as heaters dryers etc (which was bollocks) I got an electrician in to check things out.

It ended up being that a neighbouring unit had rewired the meter box in the unit block that we were in to hang their circuit off our meter - might be worth getting that checked out ;)

Nowadays it could be due to the Gov and energy Co. rape and pillage in the guise of saving the planet.... :/

Jimmy, The Greens Labor government want you to have a large power bill, this is exactly what they want to have happen to you. Suck it up and wait for the next election.

I had a similar experience when we first moved in.

We managed to find out the culprit: it was the electric hot water system that kept heating the water CONTINUOUSLY

We switch off the hot water (in the meter box, inside the apartment) when we do not use.

I know this is a pain BUT the bill went back to normal.

it is worth to check the hot water system.

Im dreading what my power bill is going to be when it comes. My last bill doubled to what it was before and ive got an inkling itll double again with the carbon tax. I guess ill find out in 2 months when i get the bill.
 
An extra $2+ per Kwh for us...

We stuck up a 3Kwh solar system and just about break even.

With the recent cold and rain my wife has been using the tumble drier so I guess I will be paying this month.
 
I got a $500 bill...but for a different reason.

I switched from AGL to Origin when they offered me a 10% discount.
When AGL found out I was switching, they offerd 12% plus some little extras to stay with them.

It took 6 months of f'ing about ...then got hit with the outstanding charges in 1 hit!!!

but for us....it was the relief valve on the HWS that was staying open all the time .....hot water down the drain and it was quiet so you did not hear it..boy what a shock when the bill came in..best everyone go give a it a check every so often..

The carbon tax has been in operation for 11 days.

It isn't the carbon tax.

Its either:

1) You've used more electricity doing "normal stuff". Check your usage on the current bill and compare it to the last one (and for the same time last year so you can get a very basic "seasonal adjustment").

2) You've used more electricity because something is malfunctioning. Check major appliances like fridges for broken seals that will keep them sucking down juice.

3) Somebody else has used more electricity and it has been applied to your energy account. Check with your real estate agent/building manager to see if there has been any work done on your building's meters.

4) The state government is gouging you.

(a) Check the price per KWh on the latest bill and compare it to the last one (and for the same time last year).
(b) Check the "Grid Access Fee" on the latest bill and compare it to the last one (and for the same time last year).

The state governments own all the companies that own all the poles and wires and they've figured out that they can make a profit based on the value of the infrastructure - they can charge more for access if they build more stuff, regardless of whether the stuff is actually necessary to make the electricity network function.


You can buy a plug-in energy consumption monitor for about $30 online or in most electronics stores. You'll be surprised to see how much a lot of devices use and how much you can save by just switching them off when you're not using them. A cheap consumption monitor will pay for itself within a couple of weeks.
 
Have just rang the elecricity company and told them would not be the carbon paying tax ,stiff shit what are you going to do about it .
they get free permits and billion dollar payouts .I am not one of the 500 largest polluters so Iam not paying . was told if enough people dont pay there is nothing they can do they will absorb the cost themselves . and we the comsumers win .STICK TOGETHER AND STICK IT UP THEM

This is the crux of it and there is no escape other than exit the system to the extent it is possible.
Keep in mind that if you reduce your 'power use' they'll have to increase your 'connection charge' to keep their profits flowing.
 
Ikea has 100 tealights for $5.

Put them in a glass jar and they'll burn for hours.... HOURS!!!!
