After months of looking at this coin on-line, I've finally figured out what they are

I originally thought the things around the Queen and sticking out from her effigy were some kind or mushroom, then I thought it was a golf reference. I've literally just realised they are knights pointing swords to the middle of a big round table.

It's funny how things like that happen, I remember a photo of a building in the snow, that I had trouble making sense of when I was a kid. When I finally saw it for what it was, it was hard to conceive why I was unable to see it properly to begin with. When I started reading your post, I thought they were umbrella handles or something!

I know it's crazy right. Now I see it I can't see it as anything else.

Funny, at the second look I already recognized the top view knights/swords/table,
It's a sketch of the "Knights of The Round Table", from the King Arthur legends.
Many movies depict these.
I know the legend, probably helped alot in recognizing this.

Why the left and right handed knights I don't know. Don't remember anything specific from the legends. Maybe the designer was too lazy to repeat the positioning / spacing work for the other half, and just mirrored?
