Advice Selling Vintage Harringtons 250oz Silver Bar (1978)

Hi all,

Seeking advice on selling a vintage Harringtons 250oz silver bar.

Dad bought it new back in 1978 (we still have the Harrington's newspaper ad clipping and receipt from when it was purchased). It has been stored carefully in plastic wrap within a safety deposit box ever since.

With Dad having passed some time ago and Mum now well into retirement, it feels like the right time to potentially realise this long-term investment.

I've attached some photos of the bar and paperwork.

Given the size and age, what's the best way to approach selling this? Looking for advice on:
  1. Best selling venues/methods (reputable dealers experienced with larger vintage bars, specific forums, etc.).

  2. Any expert insights on these specific Harringtons 250oz bars (collectibility, typical premiums over spot, things to note?).
Appreciate any guidance on this.

Thanks!

Is this for sale? or for advice?

No dealers will give you any premium for this size.

Anything above 1 kilo , can sell 5 x bars at the dealers perday?. Due to new AML ruling.
For this size; dealers will give minus 8% spot.
Best to hold it until silver goes to $75 - $100 spot.
Best Estimate timing 2028

Anyway nice piece of history given records @tcv2dx and Welcome to Silverstackers Forum.

@Holy Grail Ping!
Maybe @Holy Grail will offer you ?

Hi Golden ChipMunk,

Thanks for the welcome and the valuable advice!

Currently seeking advice, but the eventual goal is selling for Mum.

Understood re: dealers likely offering no premium (maybe below spot) for this size. Very helpful context.

Holding until $75-$100 is an interesting strategy we'll consider against Mum's needs.

Appreciate the tag for @Holy Grail and the Harringtons Bullion contact suggestion.

Thanks again!

If you do think to send to LA

There are duties sending oversea ie US , New Tariffs?.
Aust part , Declaration over $10K for custom duties.
Risks missing. Taxes & Duties , 30% Auction house commissions.
Exchange banking commissions to transfer funds.
Lot of forms to be filled up.
All this may lose something like $3500 in the transaction. estimated
Then if not sold may need to reimport back and pay duties again.
End up lot of hassle.

You can try Ebay , still about 25%

Aussies have stop sending overseas due to the above. Unless the buyer can pay for the duties if sell O/S

Thanks Golden ChipMunk - appreciate you spelling out those significant costs and risks (duties, commissions, fees, hassle) of selling overseas. Definitely gives me pause and confirms my concerns. Still investigating the US option's costs but leaning towards local might be simpler. Thanks!

This is really dope. I would suggest waiting till a stacker meetup and auctioning it there. That's what I would do at least.

The item is NOT a small Figure. No one can take it. Practically waste of time in my opinion.
May get rob? Best to do this securely.
