I agree 100% Australia has a small population spread out over a huge amount of land and thats why privatisation of transportation infrastructure, communications infrastructure etc will only result in the average australian getting shafted. Just look at the sydney airport, the entire place has turned into a clusterfuck of greed just so shareholders can get their dividend. Fast rail has already been superceded. The Sydney/Melbourne air route, isn't that one of the busiest in the world? The free market has spoken and people fly in Australia.

The issue of freight trains wouldn't be solved by a very fast rail system as it would only stop in the capital cities or at best the larger towns like Newcastle. Anyone wanting to take a train between regional towns or go from the interior to a capital city won't be served by a VFT.

Privatisation of large infrastructure projects and natural monopolies DOES NOT WORK. This has been proven time and time again. Just look at americas healthcare system ffs.

America's health care system is hardly a free market. It is mostly a crony capitalist system. Where the free market is allowed to function they provide some of the best services available anywhere in the world.
