Backhoe around the farm is one of the best tools hands down, but choose your model carefully.
I have a case 580C, 1979 model built in the USA when things where over engineered, yes its old, but zero electrics, everything is easy to get to and work on, lots of parts around, both new, used and tons of aftermarket, also may parts change over to early john deere's including shuttle shift. There is a guy Barry Lane who all he does is deal with Case parts here is Aust.
Stay away from less popular models, massey ferguson back hoes are crap, JCB have tons of specific parts and you can only get them from dealer, john deeres are great but few around in Aust.
Key points to look for
- 4 in 1 bucket is a must, don't bother if it hasn't got one
- rear hoe controls to be two stick, like you would find on any new machine, if it has the crap piano style controls with the slew on the foot controls its a pain to use.
- 4wd is overrated, and adds complexity more things to fix, its a heavy machine you don't use if after rain, if you get stuck, its got a loader, outriggers and hoe to pull you through anything.
- Open cab is much nicer, closed cab always stinks, AC never works properly, it add extra height getting in tight spots, and you have all the extra glass that always end up breaking.
- out rigger design/hoe mount, I much prefer center hoe mount with fold out out riggers, again less things to go wrong, tried and proven design and easy access to hydraulic hose change over, all the new designs with the side hoe and drop down out riggers are great, until you have to change a hose. Only draw back is you need operator skill to dig up beside a structure.
- make sure its got a shuttle shift, IE, forward backward on a lever like a forklift, its god send when doing loader work, if you have to push in a clutch to go forward and backward gets tiring real quick and not as smooth as shuttle.
