2016 US Mint High Relief Silver American Liberty medal coming

I have watched the British TV series, 'Antiques Roadshow' for many, many years and heard experts say that realising the full value of a collectible requires putting it on the market at exactly the same time that a well-heeled collector is looking for it. Then of course all the stars must align, with buyer and seller finding each other.

But surely the internet has changed all that? It's not so hard to advertise even extremely rare items to a very wide audience these days, and just as easy to track down a thing you might be looking for. Data on prices, likewise.

So is this what you guys see when you're collecting and selling rare items? Is it easier to realise a high price and, if so, is that leading to higher and higher prices?
 
It looks like there's a 2017 liberty coin which is the second one, so this could be the first in a series?

Excellent comment and question.

I do believe that the digital era has an incredibly significant impact on selling.....but not necessarily in one way only. So here's what I mean; in the arena of logistics and plain old getting the word out, the internet has been unprecedented in a positive way. It is so much easier today than even 50 years ago to allow a very wide audience / consumer base from around the world to know about your product. That's good news for both seller and buyer.

But there's a downside to the digital age's internet when it comes to selling; it has 1) created both easy access to your competition and more importantly 2) it has given rise to countless other things that people can focus on (like buying and playing for hours on end the latest $100 a pop Nintendo game or whatever) to the point that they never gain interest in certain historically popular endeavors (like coin collecting) in the first place....which of course chops down a (significant) portion of what might otherwise be potential customers.

That's why I contend the age of the internet cuts both ways when it comes to selling certain things.

That definitely appears to be the gold coin version. I believe I did read that the US Mint was planning on making the Amer. Liberty gold coin a series. Whether or not they do the same for the silver medal is not known to me but I would have to assume that this latest release will also be the first of a series. The US Mint would have to be run by idiots were they not to take advantage of the obvious and extreme popularity of the silver medal version of Amer. Liberty and continue with a series.

Have to say it is beautiful. Not sure why some have a beef with the beauty of this medal. Nice is all I can say, and it appears the 12,500 is a solid number. Kudos.
 
I Refuse to Pay these crazy premiums I like it i want it guess you cant have them all--- Usa only uber alles
 
Pay to play. :-). Prices may come down in time...I'm sure they will. Maybe a set for like 14o at some point.
 
Or prices can remain high....it's not like it would be the first time that a numismatic item went into orbit and hasn't come down yet.

Well, let the fun begin. lol. That's what I meant about 'privy'. Basically some excuse to use the design, thus flooding the market with this new image and cheapening the value and rarity of the American Liberty. Prices will plummet on this 1st issue if they mass market that image. You heard it here.
 
I saw one of these at a local coin shop. I have to say it is beautiful to marvel over. Wasn't cheap though. I hope they come down in price. But these bad boys are nice. Wow. The U.S. Mint did two things right with this. They made it beautiful, and they had a very low mintage relatively speaking vs. their gazillion mintage limits. If they don't push the envelope on 'abusing' the image (I.e use it for other sets, types, etc...), then whoever bought this and holds it long term, should do just fine. :-)
 
Prices seem to be slightly coming down on eBay. But elsewhere, off eBay, prices might be higher. Competition tends to drive prices down and it seems eBay is the #1 after market coin venue bar none. Even all the major coin dealers have an eBay store.
