For anyone who purchased the high relief Ancient Chinese Mythical Creatures coin but hasn't delved into authentic Chinese medals, I strongly encourage you to spend some time looking at the threads in the Silver Stackers Modern Chinese Coins & Medallions sub forum ( http://forums.silverstackers.com/forum-54-modern-chinese-coins-medallions.html ) and hop on over to 2 of our own Silver Stacker forum members' site http://www.chinesemedals.com/ .....I'm convinced you'll be very glad you did.

The Ancient Chinese Mythical Creatures is a nice coin but pales in comparison to many of the superb ultra high relief authentic Chinese medals which the Ancient Chinese Mythical Creatures coin got its inspiration from.

.

Thanks mmissinglink, some of those coins are fantastic! I'm hooked. So who produces those coins? are they private or government mints?

This one looks great. http://chinesemedals.com/products/n...ls-medal-2c8a4834-e52d-44e6-a4e6-027b478b2dbc

Nanjing Mint is an official mint.

The official mints don't necessarily produce better quality medals than private mints. Personally, I don't care if the medal is produced by an official mint or private mint...I just care as to whether the quality of the design and strike are good and that I like the design/theme. After all, the main reason I would buy a Chinese medal in the first place is because of the aesthetic appeal to me. That the medal may some day become valuable is not really on my mind. But there are people who buy Chinese medals with that (their potential popularity/after market value increase) as their main consideration....not me.

Example of an official China mint (Shanghai) medal set that I think is very appealing:

Example of a non-official China mint medal that I think is very appealing:

5000 mintage (a little too high for my liking). Color is one thing, but these silver pieces look nice. I'm assuming they have a LITTLE relief. :D :D :D I mean, not Chinese type relief, but nice nevertheless.  Its a big mintage, but good for a couple in my treasure box. lol.

I just bought 'Tuvalu 2016 Ancient Chinese Mythical Creatures - Yin and Yang - White Tiger, Red Phoenix, Blue Dragon, and Black Tortoise Chinese Lunar Zodiac $2 2 (TWO) Troy Ounce Pure Silver Ultra High Relief Medallic Rimless Antiqued Proof Piedfort

Please post the photo when you get it. It looks nicer than silver proof

It feels like there should be more antiquing to set apart the features. The artist rendering looks way better to me. Sort of all blends together to my eye.
