2014 Tokelau Yellowfin Tuna Now with Matte Finish

Just wanted to let out some information on apparently, the mint who produced those horrible coins are now issuing the same coin with now, a matte finish.

I purchased these coins and was concerned enough to email Gainesville coins and see what happened with the coin and how they can remedy the situation. This was their response:

"We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused as Gainesville Coins strives to provide the best quality product on the market. The Tokelau coin is being produced by a private mint and the coins that you received were from our first allotment with the mint. Gainesville Coins was one of the first companies to receive the Tuna coin and these coins were purchased directly from the private mint. The Highland Mint is in the process of transitioning the coin finish from the mirror like proof finish to a matte finish due to production issues and the quality of the piece. The mint has noticed in their first week of production a higher volume of scratches and dings on the coins than with other minted products they produce."

They went on to add they were sorry and I could exchange the coins for the matte finish if I wanted. I would ask for advice on what should I do but already told them I'd exchange it. Yes I know the first one was just a bit over spot and could have kept it as silver but I wanted a nice fish coin (as weird as that sounds) like they originally pictured on their website.

Well just wanted to throw that out their for others who were upset with the Yellowfin Tuna. Don't tell them I told you this haha

Oh and if you see the coin and their website now, it has changed (for the third time) to the one with a matte finish.

I would bet that highland mint used regular planchets meant for BU coins instead of polished planchets meant for proof or proof like coins, this is probably the only way they could possibly sell these for only $2 or less over spot.

If they are transitioning to a different finish, you just might have the variety that tilts the scales of increased premium in your favor. You're too late if you sent them back...sorry

Good price for stacking but no one wants their newly purchased coins looking all banged up. Let us know how the matte finish coins look and if that improves on the damage issue.

I was just about to ship the coins off as we speak... Hmm I didn't think about that. Interesting look. I know error coins can become rare, but I doubt a private mint, issuing from a tiny country nobody knows about, will produce some sort of popularity. That some banged, dinged up, scratchy coin will become priceless. And if it does, oh well.

And yeah I will keep ya updated and maybe show pictured of the two when I get the new coin.

why don't you just buy a new one with matte finish, and then decide whether to ship your mirrored-finished Tunas back after you make a comparison?
