2013 Australian Silver Kookaburra mintage increased to 1 million

Well this kinda sucks for anyone counting on Kooks retaining their high premium due to low mintage. 1 million isn't much compared to say, ASEs, but it's still 3x more than most other years (300k) and twice as much as the 2012 and 2011 releases.

That's not true about the old premium not being retained. If anything it pushes the premiums up for previous years as more collectors flock in wanting to complete a kook set.

The newer years (2013+) may have less of a numismatic potential but it should not affect previous years.

Yeah agreed - sorry about that, I didn't phrase my post very clearly. I meant sucks for those who might be new to stacking (like myself) who were counting on future kooks having a similar numismatic potential or premium than the existing years.
 
Might be better to load up on the fraudulent 1992s. They might be an insult to the buyers' intelligence, and the secondary market (those who collect kooks, often tarnished ones in the belief they have some historical meaning and value) but they are limited to 300,000. Time will tell how the fraudulent ones are viewed by the market - they'll never be less than bullion coins anyway. I bought 200 of the 1992s on this rationale, I very much doubt I'll be touching the 2013s on this news.
 
Hardcore.. another blow to the Kook Collector which may now be an endangered species!
 
How is this different to Panda mintages being upped to 6 million? Look at how tiny previous mintages were - Pandas are going from strength to strength with collectors!

As fishball said, if you're holding older Kooks, you're laughing if the collector base for these coins increases.

Personally I find it a bit of a joke that the standard bullion coin for 2012 (the Kookaburra) sold out in 2011 because of the mintage.

The 1992 kooks are not part of the series are they?
isn't there another 1992 kook that is totally different?
thought there was two 1992 versions, a kook & a bullion kook

The current 1992 Kookaburras are identical (same die hobs) as the original 1992 Kookaburra bullion coins - they're the same.

The depth of the strike are different imo. I can see the queen side is a lot more detailed in the old 92. :/

where are you getting proofs at bullion prices ???

if you can get the proof for the same price as bullion grab the proofs with both hands
 
lots of years they can go back and mint more of , all i can say is they wouldn't make coins they cant sell means more people are stacking?
