1966 round 50 pcgs grading difference.

So I recently got several round 50's graded that I have handpicked over the last 12 months from multiple collections, dealers, coin shows and auctions. all the coins I got were meant to be uncirculated with a large number being x-mint roll" or ones I pulled out of mint sets.
of the top 40 coins these are 2 that have far different grades but are hard to tell apart unless in hand. I will post up results in a day or to but in the mean time who would like to guess which has the highest grade and no cheating by looking them up on pcgs web site. Feel free to guess grades

I'll say this much, the 2nd coin has far fewer detracting marks for me and nicer coin surface ;)
 
No idea about grade, but I'm choosing coin 1 based upon the greater detail on the shoulder of the old girl and on the emu.
 
Higher grade = 1st one


By no means an expert on these, so just for gits & shiggles, I'll throw out a wild guess & say MS67


No idea of the 2nd.. AU58?

I would say the second one has a better strike. The top one may have been cleaned too.

Eye Appeal is one component of grade. For coins grading above MS/PR 60, eye appeal is one of the four components of grade.

For Mint State and Proof coins, the three factors comprising a coin's "technical grade" are:
1.Number and severity of marks and abrasions
2.Luster, or Reflectivity for Proofs
3.Strike, which is rarely a problem for proofs and strike is expected to be sharp, a weak strike being a deduction in the case of proofs.

For Circulated coins, there are:
1.The amount of wear. This is by far the most important factor in the grading of circulated coins.
2.Marks and abrasions. Depending on the grade, a certain amount of marks and abrasions are expected with circulated coins. Severe or unusually serious marks "for the grade" can be a negative. The higher the circulated grade, the less severe marks can be before they would effect grade.
3.Luster. AU (Almost Uncirculated) coins should have some original luster. For lower grades color and originality have the same effect on grading as luster does for higher grades.

The "technical" grade of the coin is the grade of the coin based on the factors above without taking eye appeal into consideration. Eye appeal either adds or subtracts from the "technical" grade, or is neutral as a factor in determining the final grade. For toning, PCGS uses seven levels of eye appeal, from "Amazing" to "Ugly". For luster on mint state coins and depth of reflectivity on proofs, PCGS uses six levels of eye appeal, from "Amazing" to "Negative".
 
Can't resist throwing my hat in the ring!

At fist glance I thought the first one was the lower grade example. Looking at it again - the surfaces have a bit of chatter but look almost reflective. Its tough but I think one is an AU58 and the other is an MS64. I'm just trying to make up my mind which is which! The second coin looks quite chatter-free but might have some slight wear on the high points (very hard to tell from the images). If it does that would be the AU58 coin and the top one is MS64. If the second one is UNC, I would put that at MS64 and the top one as AU58.

just to let you know none have been graded higher than ms66 (pop of 10) to date out of the 286 graded coins

Well, if anything, that just proves that: 1.) I don't see much or know about these much; and 2.) I definitely didn't check PCGS! :lol:


Was originally going to say MS64 to 67, but figured I'd throw out a specific #, anyway.


Now I'm chickening out.. :D

1st = MS64 - 66
2nd = AU58

Fine, since it's PCGS, let's split the difference & go with 65


#1 = MS65
#2 = AU58

That's my final answer..


Now what do I win?! :D
 
Lol wait till everyone has a guess before I announce the champion grader (other than me ;) )
 
They are both high grade but I am worried about the scratch on the bottom coin below the queens chin.Even though the bottom coin has less
chatter than the top coin I think the scratch will drop it below the grade of the top coin.Maybe the photo is enhancing the scratch and making it look worse than it is which would then mean that the bottom coin is graded higher.Eye appeal would have to go to the top coin as it is far more brilliant than the bottom coin so the decision is really up in the air.Unfortunately these observations don't make grading any easier
 
Yeah, it's time to clean up so people find out.

I've really enjoyed reading people's comments.

I tried a Beer today that was delicious, personally I found I liked it and it naturally had a weaker alcoholic content and a nice frosty top, that's struck me with a great finish. Whilst my mate had this over-advertised beer I guess it's taste vs. alcoholic content.

Wonder what the solution will hold?
 
OK so the top one is one of the finest examples known coming in at ms66 and the second is a ms 64. Both pictures are Pcgs true view pictures and whilst good they don't actually show how good they look in hand.
