1966 50c

Hi all,

Has anyone been noticing the ridiculous premiums on these coins lately?

I was buying them at about $12 each when spot was 34/35, which was between 50c-$1premium but now with spot at about $31/32, it's closer to a $1-$2 premium. However, i've seen many of these go for $13-14 in large quantities on ebay. That's close to a 15-20% premium over spot, which is in line with freshly minted kooks or koalas!

Given their abundance, it seems a very high premium to pay when you can buy a 1kg bullion bar for 3/4% over spot price any day of the week (and can get some great deals on here also closer to spot, esp pre decimal?)

Am I missing something for what is effectively junk silver?

Cheers

50c are the next Pandas...

Forgive my ignorance, still learning about Pandas. Are you saying premiums are going up or down?

Sorry I was being sarcastic :p

What I was saying sarcastically was that premiums will rocket to the moon (+10000% of spot).

Not likely though, just a jest.

Thanks that's what i thought! :-)

I think ebay is fetching far higher prices that on here generally lately. I always found on here you could buy/sell stuff for a fair price but lately - ebay (despite it's costs) seems far more reasonable. Things I've listed on here and received little interest in I have put on ebay and received up to 50% more than what I was asking for on here.

It comes and goes - sometimes better buying/selling here, sometimes ebay or shops.

I received over 15% from a coin dealer in cash than what I was asking here once, but most people are so focused on spot value here they easily miss on many bargains even if you tell them.

whats really weird to me is that pre florins are so much cheaper than 50c piecs

Yeah.. thats a classic call.. i did a thread on how 1966 50's are a newbie investment and how they were effectivley junk at one stage.

Unless you are referring to the 1927 commemorative then i wholeheartedly agree. I have an expansive florin collection and a decent stack of 50's but id gladly part with my 50's for a 1for1 swap with pre 46 florins.

That's eBay for you!

A couple of years ago I was buying them for $4-$5 on eBay, sometimes below spot price.

Then people started to hear about silver and the prices skyrocketed.

I am still buying them for $10 locally.

The facination is that they are proper coins, not some fancy schmanzy rubbish produced for the collectors market, this means that your average punter can have a go without worrying about being ripped off or paying a fortune for a "collectable"

There are three to a troy ounce, most people do not know what a troy ounce is or how it is different to an ordinary ounce or why it matters but they can at least divide the spot by three to get the value. Try working out what a 1oz dragon is worth.

They are easily recognised, my brother-in-law keeps bringing me rare $1 commemorative coins, I keep explaining to him that they are common circulating coins. My father-in-law keeps bringing me the Millenium 50 cent coins, I keep explaining that I only want the incuse variety. A 1945 coin is worth twice as much as a 1946 but they look the same, if you can't remember the year you could be overpaying for a coin or selling it for half its value.

but a round 50 cent, anyone can recognise that.

This is why they are popular with people who do not know much about silver but want to get a foot in the door. Most of my 50 cents have now been converted to bullion but I still buy them when I can because I know I will always find a market for them.

i sold a couple for of aUNC Rounds for $51 each (ebay). Started at 1 cent so market driven price. And a week before $33 for a standard 50c. Double silver spot price for cupro-nickel !

these things are soo hot.. im constantly surprised to see these achieve the prices over spot they do..

I absolutley put it down to "Newbs"... before i had a clue i purchased these .. evolution of investment.. but i guess i need to keep my ear close to the ground cos its about aggregate demand and not what i think is a good investment (damn uneducated buyers.)

Must be a lot of accountants out there.
