I have always loved the Aztec Calendar Kilos. Anyone know why the 2013 mintage was dropped from 1500 in previous years to only 500? Just not selling? For any collectors, if you could only have one (most of us can't have even that many!) which year would you buy and why?
Help me understand....the bi-metallic uncirculated coin face value is $100 but the 2 oz proof silver coin is only $20 face value? Yeah, I know that face value almost never represents coin/metal value but isn't a coin's legal tender currency value (the face value amount minted on it) supposed to be what that coin can buy you in the country of issue? So in other words, the bi-metallic coin can buy $100 legal tender worth of goods but the 2 oz $20 coin 1/5th of that? .
If I'm not mistaken, the 2013 1 kilo silver Aztec Calendar coin is the last issue of the planned series. Can someone corroborate or correct my understanding? .
So if true, would that make the 2013 the one to have, or the one to avoid? I know the first in the series is often the best to hold but they are not often seen and the 2013 mintage is only 1/3 of the earlier coins. Dumb question but the Aztec calendar on the coin is exactly the same each year, just a date change?
I'm too poor to afford a kilo calendario but here's my picture of the 2 oz version. The level of detail is amazing. My beginning camera image of this is 37 MP, I can zoom in almost to the microscopic and continue to see more detail. Azteca Calendario on a copper splash background by TomD77, on Flickr
That is a beautiful coin wouldn't mind getting my hands on one By the way Tom your photos are superb. I know I've said it before. Nice to have a good photographer on board SS. Oh yea. Was checking out your other photos. Nice! Thanks for the link.
I would believe that the very low mintage would make it more desirable by collectors and certainly by anyone who is lucky enough to be able to realistically shoot for making a complete set of kilo Aztec calendars. I know that in general I would shoot for the lowest mintage coins of a series first if I wanted to complete a set. .
I can corroborate that you are mistaken Hadn't read or heard that it was the last in the series but also haven't seen a 2014 for sale anywhere (even though we're more than halfway through the year already) so emailed Banco and this is the response I received; Although not quite sure how the "experts in transporting all types of freight" at Secured Transport Corp are distributing these coins as there's no pricing or option to buy. Have also emailed Banco regarding the mintage for the 2014. Expecting it to be in line with last years.
Thanks. Here's a link to actual mintage numbers of silver Libertads and Aztec Calendar coins (excluding for 2013): http://www.libertadproof.com/mintage.html Looking at comparative mintage numbers of a number of different silver kilo coins and from different years, by far the lowest mintage coins are the 2013 Libertad and Aztec Calendar (500 or less): http://www.pandaamerica.com/NEWS_kiloCoins_03_05_10.asp?keyword=Silver Kilo&sortby=entrec .
The only kilo Aztec on the mint website is for AU$1,400 but the pics are of the 2008 version and nothing else indicating which year it's from. The 2013 is selling for AU$1,600 on APMEX. Just saw another one that I really like, Serie Piedra de los Soles. Pretty pricey but most sizes have sold out. And it was cheaper to buy than 2oz over the 1oz despite no apparent mintage figures... 1/10 oz AU$10 1/2 oz AU$29 1oz AU$56 2 oz AU$54 5 oz AU$288 TomD- excellent photo of the 2oz
The mint store only sells/ships within Mexico. A lot of the added cost we see from dealers outside of mexico is the expense of getting the coins out of Mexico, at least large quantities of numismatic items.
Thanks House and mmissinglink for the additional research, confirms what little I have been able to find. I wanted to know what 2014 mintage would look like now that House confirmed 2014 is coming. IMHO it would not be likely it would go back up to 1500, but if it did for some reason, 2013 would be the year to own. More likely that it will stay at 500 or maybe even drop??? In any case, got a rare bonus from work this year and decided to buy something special that I normally would not add to the stack so I just took the plunge on a 2013 from APMEX at $1500. If you are interested the site says they have 1 left. They are also available from Panda America (unknown how many they have). You can get them shipped from PA for less but my experience is with APMEX so I went with them. Mintage of 500, beautiful big piece of silver, this is one for me to admire. Keep my fingers crossed that I could get my money back in the future but that is really not what this one is all about.
Hellcat, congrats! You have joined an elite group of people who own a 2013 kilo silver Aztec Calendar coin. I am envious of you. In terms of mintage for the newly released 2014 1 kilo proof-like Libertad, it will be very interesting to learn what the ACTUAL mintage number is (as opposed to the maximum mintage) of this coin. db23...do you have actual mintage figures for the 2014 kilo PL Libertad? .
So this topic serves as an excuse to show my monstertube again: Since it's less impressive I omitted here to mention what I paid.
