I seem to be seeing quite a few of this medals coming on ebay with low "mintages" usually around 3000-7000 pieces. They are being listed by luckymoneyro.

I have also seen quite a few listings by boybluejay which are copper medals certified and graded by NGC.

Does anyone have any thoughts about investment potential?

Good find they are selling medals alot cheaper than I paid. Depending on what medals you buy there is alot of potential.

By the prices luckymoeyro is sellig alot of the medals who knows. They are very cheap for some quite rare ones. One set of medals is 25% of the price I paid. Maybe I was ripped off. Alot of the medals for sale would be very hard to copy. Still you ever know, I will stick with sellers I know.

I have also bought a few stuff from boybluejay or Jay. Free shipping is a real bonus for overseas buyers. It came extremely well packed and presented. He also has other interesting world coins.

Some of the copper/brass medals are superbly crafted and I buy them for that reason. If I like them and they are reasonably priced I consider them. They are purely a 'numismatic' buy. If they have longer term investment value that is a bonus to me.

The WuDang mountain set you sold me is on his store (or was).

It is obviously plated and not double sealed.

If you do consider buying any medals always get them from know sources and/or slabbed. i have been collecting copper and brass medals for 6yrs now and the advice I would give anyone is buy medals that are scarce, low mintage and something I will always stick to medals that appeal to you. I have about 50-60 sets and individual medals that I need to send to NGC. I will start a new topic when I eventually get started.

I read enough bad stories about luckymoneyro.

The medals, though with low mintages of 500 (earlier) - 8000, are certainly very lowly priced, if you can buy them in China. The medal market gained some serious attention last year and many companies started producing them. The collectors base have grew a bit, though price remains pretty low.

One thing with medal is, people in China always believe coins are legal tender and guaranteed by the government while medal is not.

If you like art, copper medal is perfect match. If you want investment potential, perhaps you have to wait a little longer, and I believe there are better option as far as investment goes, if you have some fund and shorter waiting period.

With medal, generally we are talking about A$50 to A$100 and you can get a OMP set complete with the packaging. That is the kind of selling price in China. It is different story if you buy NGC graded medal.

Sure is. I read there is a copper medal produced by a private company (non official mint) that is gaining a lot of popularity among the medal collector. So demanded that the price has jumped few fold and it is almost impossible to find one in open market now. That was quite a recent issue, perhaps just few years ago.

If I can find the link I will post it here. Read it few months ago.

Controversial theme though and first of its kind in China.

Large size copper medal is always an interesting subject. First it is medal so not many China collector want it. Those who collect copper medal in China are true collectors. Second, there are government mint vs private medal company. People always think government mint has higher authority than private medal company.

So the market is quite divided. It doesn't matter though. Some of the most beautiful and best performing medal (in terms of monetary gain) were produced by private medal company. I think it is about the theme (controversial them seems good), design (especially those with high relief), and finally mintage.

Unlike other market, medal collector don't usually quit. They are in this market because they love it. You can say this is pretty much a virgin market with no pollution from the speculator or investor, yet.
