We have a preferential voting system as you know. In 2025 Labor polled about 35% of the primary vote. The Coalition polled around 31% which going by your statement means that around 70% of people didn't want them in power, and with Independents about 34% of the voters wanted them in which of course means that 64% didn't.
You can't form a government that represents the majority of the voters intent on those figures alone. So that's why we have a preferential voting system.
After preferences were distributed Labor received around 55% of the vote, indicating a clear intent of the majority of voters in Australia.
