If you're not a short term trader, but have a long term view, a Citibank Global currency account could be the go. Fee free and tight spread. Can set up accounts in multiple currencies and transfer between them as your view changes.

I initially got mine as my NAB account came with a 4% transfer fee on international purchases along with a wide spread. My Citibank account is linked to a debit card and automatically uses the appropriate currency account for the transaction with no foreign transaction fee.

This was a great solution but unfortunately NAB have bought out Citi's Australian Retail stuff, and this account will now cease to operate from mid May. Does anyone know of another account that offers similar value?

HSBC Everyday Global Account, offered by HSBC Australia

  • Low fees overall
  • Lowest telegraphic transfer (TT) fees I can find in Aust.
  • Least-garbage FX rates in a bank account
  • VISA Debit card that allows you spend deposits in currencies you hold
I do not stand to make any commission or make any financial or material gains from this recommendation
