All the chest beating Biden has done over the past few months warning Russia all hell will break loose if they dare invade.The action just started. Gold likely to bounce around this price, but anyone who thinks that Ukraine will be settled quickly is very naive. Biden is clearly provoking Putin by sanctioning him. When was the last time a great power leader was sanctioned?
This is a great humiliation that Putin will retailate and further escalate the conflict which is what Biden wants.
The US still has a lot to go on sanctions even without touching SWIFT.
Well, Biden had his bluff called and he looks as weak as piss. China would be grinning at this lack of follow through. Hello Taiwan.
As for the sanctions , it will hurt but not cripple . Will hurt Europe just as much.
As for SWIFT, Russia will turn to the Chinese version ( cant think of the name) and it will be business as s usual.
The Russians with off shore assets will feel it , but that counts for little. They can afford it and anyway they cant go to Putin and say hey you took a big slice of out of our pie so we could stay in business but now you have had it stolen from us by the West.
No winners, just who will be the biggest loser.
Putin who has been so pragmatic looks rather silly with some of his recent speeches citing drug addicted naziism . I find that scary as he has always made sense even if you did not agree with him.
His move in Georgia and Crimea was accepted at home. This time I feel even the Russians are saying WTF.
Now, gee I never thought a NATO country would be invaded but Poland must be a little nervous. NATO are strengthening its positions in the countries around Ukraine and I think everyone is thinking about what happened in 1939 . Hitler tap danced through Austria, people thought oh yeah that will be it. Then Poland , then……
Is Ukraine this centuries Austria? it was also justified by saying it had the soul of the invader.

Biden didn't bluff (I'm a Trump supporter by the way). He said right from the beginning the US won't send troops into Ukraine, at least officially. Of course, I don't believe his words just as I don't believe Putin says he has no intention to invade Ukraine. The US will somehow get involved, even if it's through another country such as Belarus.
As for his perceived weakness. Sun Zi art of war says when you're strong, act weak. When you're weak, act strong.
Europe will find another source of energy just as Australia has found other export markets. Commodities will eventually flow to the end buyer even if it means going through a middleman, but the middleman will take a huge 50% cut and I can bet with you that middlemen are most hated.
From our point of view, if you lose more than me, I'm the winner. Only Westerners believe in win win. In a way, it's true, in war, the side that loses the least wins.
If Ukraine is taken over completely, Australia isn't safe either. Alor says Taiwan is at the bottom of the list. So what is the top of the list? I'll complete his sentence. Australia is higher on that list than Taiwan.
China will take Taiwan in the near future.( this decade)
I dont think China would invade Australia unless there was a dire need for food or resources. In that case we should be worried but that is decades away I believe. The Chinese rhetoric is a sign to me that they are happy to have a cooling of ties. Easier to invade someone you dont have strong bonds with.
It’s not a matter of USA being strong or weak, Sanctions are just a poke in the eye with a blunt stick. We know what the USA is capable of.
They have stated they will defend NATO territory but when a neighbouring country who has yet to joint the club, well tough titties.
Any battle for a NATO country will now be fought from the Ukraine by Russia.
As we stand yeah NATO has not been invaded but as I suggested earlier, is this just the first step which should have been dealt with to stop further progression. Putins tone is a real worry. He cannot afford to be trusted again so deal making is off the table.
Once the Ukraine is conquered and they have established themselves there the next venture will be that much more harder to stop.
USA is notorious for having to be dragged into wars kicking and screaming where it is justified but are quick of the mark to start wars which just suits their fiscal and political needs.
Will be interesting to see the gas market over the next year, unless someone can pick up the shortfall there is not enough projected output to cover the needs at present. Need does encourage production but until it is out of the ground things could get interesting .
Our coal made its way to China via other countries over the last years even though there was ban. Gas can be shipped but a pipeline which has been turned off is hard to replace . To get Russian gas to Europe it needs that pipe opened.
It could divide Europe with some wanting to Turn the pipe line back on.

This didn't age well. The war is already an existential mistake, a tragic for civilians of both countries, and what will happen in the next couple of months will be unimaginable.

That one does seem to support the "R5000/g arbitrage trade" is in action despite the sanctions. If this keeps going Putin gets to keep his cake and eat it, too.
