Melbourne Programmers/Developers.

Hi all, I've recently started getting into programming with the intent of doing it as a hobby/side source of income and am currently trying to get my head around Java by doing Helsinki Uni's Object Oriented Java Course.

If there are any people in Melbourne who would be kind enough to give me some tips/let me pick your brain, I'm happy to shout you a coffee or lunch.

Also, if any interstate people have some general advice for beginners feel free to chime in.

I heard it's a good place to start because it's the most commonly used overall, is used for android apps, and requires you to understand what you're doing - as opposed to Python or something where it is easier, but doesn't help a newb understand why things happen. I've also heard it's much easier to go from static typing to dynamic than the other way around.

Where would you reccommend starting?

Depends if you have a specific end-point in mind.

If you are looking to get into web development then I'd recommend starting with PHP (although I haven't gotten around to learning it very well myself)
Many sites are built using a CMS system such as Joomla or Drupal and these are both php based

The majority of open source software is also written in php - including the silverstackers site you are using (fluxbb) :)
 
PhP and java both great and annoying as hell.

Java is pretty much dead for server backend and desktop, but is essential for android.

For Windows 10, you'll learn HTML/CSS/JS. For OSX you'll probably want to learn Swift. On Linux you'll probably want to learn C and/or C++.

I'm planning on also doing Harvard's CS50 course in a few weeks, and they use C, so hopefully between doing that and Helsinki's Java course I might be able to learn how to use a couple of languages and also focus on problem solving and algorithms etc.

Does that seem like a reasonable place to start? The idea is 1+ hours each night and then 6-8 hours per weekend.
