Some of these kilobars even have contain the correct mass and purity of gold.

Why fake refiner stamps?

  • the refiner markings are a way to disguise the origins of the metal
  • buyers weren't willing to pay for bars without LBMA refiner stamps, or only willing to buy at steep discounts
Kilobars with fake refiner markings of such technical sophistication that the original refiners have a hard time telling them apart from the authentic article

thanks for sharing that gem RCS! Read closely and critically there is a lot of spoof and spin. The man has shown his hand on private ownership of Au.

you make the real gold in the host country and stamp yourself with AAA serial number
you bring in a decoy with the same AAA serial number
you are allowed to bring out up to the same amount of gold that you brought into the host country
no one ever suspected you

why they never check if the gold you brought in were real ???
they presume that the gold you brought out was real, also never check ???
you feed the checker with paper cert, they saw the same manufacturer and exactly similar numbers

solution
take picture of all items bars in & serial
then verify with the picture taken to see the bars were the originally brought in, before granting exit

I read that article with interest. It is only the stamped markings/serial numbers that are forged. I think mind games are being played here.

its a smuggling through customs
some countries does not allow gold export, but allow entry of gold being brought in and then out (provided proof is given eg bar numbers and certificate proof)
